Reconciliation begins by closing the graduation gap

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Put simply, postsecondary education (PSE) matters for addressing income inequality and fulfilling economic potential for aboriginal Canadians, making all of Canada better off. But despite growing numbers of First Nations, Inuit and Metis university graduates, the gap with the rest of the population continues to grow… Curricula, programs and the full range of university services must better promote and respect indigenous knowledge, experiences and world views so all students may learn and benefit from exchange and understanding.

Monday, August 24th, 2015

The Ontario government has signed a political accord with the Chiefs of Ontario that Premier Kathleen Wynne says will guide relations between First Nations and the province… It affirms that First Nations have an inherent right to self-government and that the relationship with Ontario is based upon respect for that right. It also commits the signatories to work together on a range of issues, including resource benefits sharing and jurisdictional matters.

Who’s more progressive, the Liberals or the NDP?

Friday, August 14th, 2015

What is remarkable, however, is the relatively moderate nature of both parties. There is no plan to significantly increase government revenues – the tax increases proposed by both parties are at least partially offset by tax cuts… The parties are operating in a box designed by the Conservatives, one where government revenues are constrained and, as a result of a desire among all leaders to be seen as good fiscal managers, spending is therefore constrained as well.

Canadians ‘Ripped Off’ by Drug Costs? No Kidding

Wednesday, August 12th, 2015

… everything this government does reveals it couldn’t care less about whether or not “Canadians” are being ripped off… the corporate rights agreement still being negotiated with the European Union…. (CETA)… will not only increase drug costs to individual Canadians by between $850 million and $1.645 billion (an increase of between seven and 13 per cent) annually, it will give giant pharmaceutical companies even more power to delay the entry of cheaper generic drugs onto the market… The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)… would give even more powers to drug companies.

Canada’s government shamefully refuses to implement the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

… UNDRIP is a fairly simple document that affirms the legal rights of indigenous people to “freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.” It stipulates that indigenous people should not be discriminated against and that they should be able to freely practice and revitalize their customs — rights that most Canadians take for granted… It constitutes, as outlined in Article 43, “the minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the indigenous peoples of the world.”

Universities ‘decolonize’ their courses and campuses

Wednesday, July 8th, 2015

Public officials (with the regrettable exception of the prime minister) acknowledged the damage done by Canada’s racist Indian residential schools; promised to take to heart the lessons of the past; and pledged to build a new national partnership based on trust, mutual respect and a fair sharing of the benefits of the land. But they stopped short of specifics. The universities were commendably explicit. They set clear targets and spelled out how they planned to reach them:

We should face up to history and make sure Canada Day is for all

Wednesday, July 1st, 2015

By the time we celebrate our 150th Canada Day in 2017, we need to take concrete steps towards fixing the relationship with aboriginal peoples. There’s no contradiction between keeping that in mind and taking special pride today in our country on its official birthday. Ultimately, Canada Day must be for everyone, and only facing up to the truths of the past will make that possible.

Monday, June 29th, 2015

The cohabitation of Western and indigenous knowledge on campuses has the power to open a dialogue among cultures, enhance our mutual understanding and make change happen. There is a moral, social and economic imperative to act… Among the 13 principles to be announced this week is institutional commitment at every level to develop more opportunities for indigenous students. That means everything from community partnerships to financial assistance, academic support and mentorship.

Premier Kathleen Wynne should take on the mantle of reconciliation

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015

The first step would be to… work with rural and urban Indigenous communities and leaders to identify which recommendations should be prioritized by the provincial government… Ontario could change how it educates… [with] new courses and curriculum requirements that properly teach the history and present-day situation of Indigenous peoples… [and] providing new funding for things like Aboriginal healing centres, alternatives to imprisonment and traditional sentencing, and Aboriginal-specific victim programs.
