Realities faced by black Canadians are a national shame
… systemic discrimination has subjected black people to racial profiling by law enforcement, soaring incarceration rates, disproportionate poverty and poor health, the over-apprehension of black children by child welfare agencies and lower graduation rates. Black women… face a rate of poverty that is almost five times higher than that of white Canadian women, and are one of the fastest-growing groups in federal prisons. Underlying these injustices, the UN Working Group has made clear, is systemic racism.

Quebec better at keeping poor families afloat
The slashing of Ontario Works or disability benefits does indeed force parents into deeper poverty and can limit their chances to get their kids back if they have faced the deep misfortune of having them apprehended… Imagine what would take place if large numbers of Ontarians demanded a kinder and more just system of fair and stable employment, more affordable housing options and an affordable daycare system? The time for citizens to demand positive change is now.

Government must act to end racism in children’s aid system
… four in 10 children in the care of the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto are black in a city where only 8 per cent of children are. Worse, the problem is not just in Toronto, but throughout the province… Ontario’s children’s minister, Michael Coteau, refused to promise any funding to implement the report’s 18 important recommendations to address issues of racism in the system. This is unacceptable.

Ontario same-sex couples no longer have to adopt their own children – The All Families Are Equal Act
… legislation introduced [today will] give same-sex parents in Ontario who aren’t biologically related to their children the same legal rights as heterosexual moms and dads. Nor will people who are not legally considered parents have to live in fear they cannot make medical and other decisions about their children if a spouse becomes incapacitated… the money and energy LGBTQ families were expending on paperwork and worrying should be going toward diapers and play time.

Changes to children’s aid system are a promising start
… the overly complex system of 47 children’s aid societies responsible for more than 15,000 kids in foster care and group homes is a mess that puts at risk the well-being, and sometimes the very lives, of children in its care. Now, finally, after a decades-long hands-off approach, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services has a plan to overhaul the system… [they] have been left to operate in silos without sufficient oversight and direction from the provincial government.

Why we are weaning our students from electronic noise
We’ve decided to… ban… all electronic devices from both the course lectures and the discussion sections… thinking thrives on silence or on dialogue with other human voices, when electronic noise has faded. We hope to help wean our students from that noise. Our new policy is a small step, but we’re convinced that it’s in the right direction.

Ontario coalition pushes for transparency on autism policies
… the Ontario Autism Coalition asked Children’s Minister Michael Coteau to waive confidentiality agreements it says will muzzle panel members and limit their ability to hold the government to account. “It’s time to restore some trust between the government and the autism community by permitting a full and open discussion about how we help kids with autism in Ontario”… The newly launched Ontario autism program advisory committee includes parents, educators and experts.
