Premiers call dibs on federal money before it’s all spent

Health care is provincial jurisdiction. They can levy taxes like Ottawa. If they need more money, they could raise taxes… A lot of what Ottawa does is sending money to people or provinces. But health care? … Mr. Trudeau doesn’t want to just send cheques. He wants to say he paid for something new and specific that Canadians want. He told the premiers that Ottawa might fund better long-term care, or pharmacare.

Deliver on national child-care this time, please

For now, all the Trudeau government has put up for a national child-care system is a down payment and a promise… The down payment includes $420 million to help provinces train and retain qualified early-childhood educators and $20 million over five years to fund a secretariat to craft its national “child care vision.”

Ontario Making Adoption Process Easier for Families

The funding will help bring more prospective adoptive parents, children and youth together permanently through the development of a centralized intake service and expansion of online matching. It will also provide additional supports and training for families post-adoption. “It is clear that children and youth who are placed in homes through adoption do significantly better than if they stay in group homes,” said Jill Dunlop, Associate Minister of Children and Women’s Issues.

Ontario’s attorney general says COVID-19 has jumpstarted justice system modernization

Remote attendance at court, digital signatures where only hard copies had previously been mandatory, electronic issuance and sharing of court documents, as well as service by email without consent or court order are some of the innovations… broadcasting court proceedings on video streaming websites had increased participation in the justice system… the Superior Court reported that 50,000 hearings had been conducted virtually in a province where the technology was brand new.

When we factor in inflation and population growth, base funding will decrease for education at all levels, social services, and municipalities. RCMP union opposes Ottawa’s plan to ban certain semi-automatic rifles

… the group wants Ottawa to dedicate funding to the RCMP Border Integrity Program to investigate and dismantle gun-smuggling rings, and the Canadian Firearms Program, which it says lacks the resources “to provide effective gun crime tracing and enforcement units.” … The paper highlights the role of illegal handguns – rather than legal rifles – in rising national gun violence.

Understanding Ontario’s long-term care tragedy

The problem is not the ownership model of LTC homes. The major oversights that led to this tragedy were a failure to proactively test asymptomatic LTC workers and a failure of successive governments to approve redevelopment in homes with multi-residential rooms. Blaming other causes is specious and does not honour the memories of the Ontarians whose lives have been lost to this terrible pandemic.
