Saturday, August 18th, 2012

Housing crisis in Attawapiskat still isn’t solved
Wednesday, August 15th, 2012
2 August 2012
the federal government has never bothered much about the root causes of anything on First Nations reserves. That’s why many remain chock-a-block with poverty and hopelessness… Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who did his best to convince Canadians that the band council was to blame for the housing crisis because they had somehow mismanaged funds, was way off base. All he did was create even more distrust… To this day, the housing crisis in Attawapiskat – and dozens of other northern native communities – remains largely unsolved.

How medicare is morphing from ‘bare minimum’ to ‘best practices’
Friday, August 10th, 2012
26 July 2012
Most studies show our medicare is wasteful — not always healthful — compared with public systems across Europe… harvesting low-hanging fruit won’t get them to best practices, which requires rather more heavy lifting… Doctors take up one-quarter of all health expenditures in Ontario, about $48 billion, and roughly 42 per cent of all program spending in the province… provinces are also keen to replicate Ontario’s experience in pushing down the price of generic drugs

There is no health without mental health
Thursday, August 9th, 2012
26 July 2012
Mental illness and addictions have a staggering impact on individuals and on society. This year, 6.7 million Canadians will feel the pain of that impact. The economic costs of these illnesses are over $50 billion annually or 2.8 per cent of GDP. The Public Health Agency of Canada recently reported that among the seven major health conditions, mental illnesses had the highest total direct care costs in Canada and were the third leading contributor to the total annual economic burden of the seven conditions.

To stop youth violence in Toronto, we must solve its root causes
Wednesday, August 8th, 2012
25 July 2012
Alarming gaps exist between neighbourhoods that are doing well and those that are falling behind. These are serious challenges that put our entire city at risk… First, we need to build youth leadership at a community level… Second, we need to improve access to supports that provide young people with positive options… Third, we need to increase youth employment… Finally, we must restore mixed-income neighbourhoods… This poverty isn’t just concerning because of where it’s located, but also because racialized communities are disproportionately affected.

Referendums at heart of Swiss political system
Wednesday, August 8th, 2012
July 21, 2012
… referendums aren’t just an aspect of Swiss democracy, they’re its most distinctive, beloved element. On a national level they’re usually held four times a year, with multiple items each time. On cantonal (provincial) or local levels, they’re even more common… there, voting happens constantly. Not just voting, but weighing and debating. “The whole society is in a constant state of discussion… The process has a moderating rather than radicalizing influence, leading to what’s called a negotiation or consensus democracy

Ontario, Law Commission highlights ageism in justice system
Saturday, July 21st, 2012
July 19, 2012
A Framework for the Law as it Affects Older Adults. It is designed to highlight and remedy the many ways provincial laws, regulations and policies discriminate on the basis of age, deprive seniors of rights guaranteed in the Constitution and shut them out of policy debates that directly affect their lives. “The framework creates a coherent, principled, step-by-step means of evaluating law, policy and practices as they affect older adults,”
