Educating Grayson: Are inclusive classrooms failing students?
Paul Bennett, an education consultant based in Halifax, says a movement to make the classroom the be-all and end-all of inclusion is shortsighted. “The system is not built to accommodate the range of diversity we now have in our school system,” he says. In the case of children… who have the most complex and acute needs, Mr. Bennett says the public education system should provide one-on-one intensive supports and only provide alternative school settings if integration doesn’t work.

Free prescriptions for many children and young adults in Ontario set to end in March
Under the new plan, children and young adults will continue to get free prescriptions if they or their parents do not have private health insurance coverage. Otherwise, private insurance plans become the “first payer” for prescription medicines… At issue is how pharmacists will be able to verify whether customers under 25 have private coverage, or deductibles or co-payments… At drug stores, pharmacists will ask customers if they have insurance and check their coverage online.

Doug Ford should accept the evidence on sex-ed
… if Ford truly wants to consult, as he says he does, he will listen to the health and education experts, 27 school boards, 28 First Nation communities, students and parents that have spoken out in submissions, protests and rallies since he was first elected, to demand that the 2015 curriculum be reinstated… no political promise made to a small group of social conservatives is worth sacrificing the safety of students. They must be prepared to navigate the world they are living in, not the one their parents did.

Ontario Government Is Fuelling Youth Homelessness Crisis, Say Critics
The Conservative government announced the closure of the independent watchdog’s office last month. The office had a broad mandate to advocate for children, including those in government care, Indigenous children and youth, incarcerated youth and those with disabilities. Activists and advocates who work with youth saw the news as a major blow, with an increase in youth homelessness as one result… Youth homelessness is a big problem… but it’s one we can fix.

School board funding cuts send a message to Ontarians
The reason given by the Doug Ford government to cut funding for programs that assisted needy teenagers to obtain after-school jobs, provided support for racialized youngsters and gave some assistance with Indigenous issues, is yet another example of the government’s couldn’t-care-less attitude about the cost-cutting that affects the most needy throughout the province.

Ontario education cuts to hit vulnerable youth the most, students say
Focus on Youth, which provided after-school jobs and programming for youth in high-poverty neighbourhoods, is gone, as are $2,500 Speak Up grants, which gave students a chance to make a pitch for an activity or event to help make change in their neighbourhood. A program set up to help teens who’ve dropped out return to school and pursue post-secondary was also on the chopping block, as well as tutoring for struggling elementary students.

School boards ‘blindsided’ as Ford government slashes program funding
The EPO grant — which is taking a $25 million hit — “has a long track record of wasteful spending, overspending and millions of dollars of unfunded commitments,” said Kayla Iafelice. “We have performed a thorough review of the EPO Fund to ensure that it better aligns with the needs and priorities of Ontario parents, teachers and students while respecting taxpayer dollars,”.

Why not let the women and children in the Tijuana camp resettle in Canada?
Canada has set out that the treatment of women and girls is a priority of our international policy. One of the key findings of the World Refugee Council Report to be released in the new year is the extent of discrimination against women in refugee situations. Here is a clear opportunity to act against such bias… Canadian leadership in meeting this tragedy on our doorstep would be a welcome, tangible demonstration of how the compacts can be a springboard for direct action and lead to improved collaboration on migration and refugees issues.

Auditor General’s claims about OSAP inaccurate and irresponsible
Contrary to the Auditor General’s flawed claims, there is ample evidence to suggest that, in the long term, increasing the amount and availability of non-repayable grants are the best means to remove the financial barriers faced by students wishing to pursue a postsecondary education… Since the program is income tested, it should be inferred that the 25 per cent increase in uptake is, in fact, from families who would otherwise be incurring high levels of debt.

Child advocate is a cruel target for Tory cuts
… t an advocate isn’t the same thing as an ombudsman. “It outrages me that we’ve removed somebody who (people) can call who will stand beside them,” says Elman — “not an ombudsman, who’s going to look at both sides and decide whether the policy was adhered to properly, but somebody is going to stand beside that parent and be with them, or beside that child in the group home and say, ‘We’ve got you.’”
