Canada needs a brighter federal science policy
The Conservatives have shut down more than 200 scientific programs and facilities, many of them environment-related, since taking office… despite all that cutting, overall federal science funding has modestly increased over the last eight years (though… not quickly enough to keep up with inflation… The main problem… is… how it’s allotted: namely, based on a misunderstanding of how science, including innovation, works and of government’s role in the enterprise… the government has essentially transformed much of Canada’s research budget into a business subsidy.

Gap between rich and poor greater than most Canadians think Poll finds
The richest segment of Canada’s population controls close to 70 per cent of the country’s wealth. Its very poorest segment has no share at all… “There’s a huge discrepancy between the kind of Canada that people want and the kind of Canada that actually exists.” The research showed a strong appetite for government intervention to alleviate income inequality, with over 85 per cent of the country agreeing that the wealth gap was a problem.

Be careful what you wish for on doctors’ billings
… go ahead and make our OHIP billings public… it’s only fair that doctors get to reveal what they take home after covering office expenses, staff salaries and benefits, and medical supplies. as a family doctor, my take-home pay is slightly more than that of your typical school teacher . . . but without the perks, the pension and the summers off. Oh, and by the way, no Freedom 55 either. And don’t even get me started on what hospital administrators and politicians are paid.

The Beer Store’s secret sweetheart deal with LCBO revealed
Rising LCBO profits went straight to the government treasury to fund hospitals, schools and infrastructure. By contrast, The Beer Store’s profits go straight into the coffers of its private (no, not government) owners, whose corporate parents are now based abroad… For years, The Beer Store has maintained close to 80 per cent market share because of its control over volume sales of major brands in its chain. The LCBO has been held back to just over 20 per cent, but insiders believe it would make major inroads without the protectionist pact that benefits the big brewers.

U.S. income gap a danger to Canada: TD
… the gap between high and low incomes in Canada was relatively stable through the 1970s and 1980s. That changed in the 1990s when governments began cutting transfer payments and support for low-income earners as they tried to cut deficits and balance the books. But when governments found themselves back in surpluses, the policies they put in place didn’t reverse the growing gap between rich and poor

Corporate Canada needs to pony up to reduce youth unemployment
Unfortunately, a significant minority of employers are taking advantage of the very slack job market for youth through exploitative unpaid internship positions that are generally illegal unless they are part of a formal academic program… Corporate Canada can clearly afford to do more, and it is in their own best interests to do so since labour force growth will soon grind to a virtual halt and young workers with good qualifications and work experience will be widely sought after.

Less wage discrimination for women, aboriginals, and visible minorities in public sector, not higher salaries overall: study
This study compares the wages of full-time public and private sector workers and finds significant gaps in the wages of women, aboriginal workers, and visible minority workers—and that those gaps are bigger in the private sector in every instance… The difference in public and private sector wages results from higher levels of discrimination in the private sector and a more equitable system of pay in the public sector”

Ebola vaccine story shows folly of free-market drugs
Free-market economists believe the profit motive is the most reliable and efficient force in economic decision-making. In theory, the selfish, profit-driven actions of private businesses are supposed to benefit everyone. But in the real world, the pursuit of private profit often promotes inefficiency and the misallocation of resources. One glaring (and costly) example is the private drug industry.

This is the path of innovation
In fact, there is no choice to be made between basic research, which is driven by curiosity, and applied research, which is driven by need. Foundational research is how applied scientific discoveries get started, and universities cannot encourage innovation without fostering excellent basic research… To say that foundational research is indispensable for scientific breakthroughs is fully compatible with promoting innovation.
