Speaking as a White Male …
Under what circumstances should we embrace the idea that collective identity shapes our thinking? Under what circumstances should we resist collective identity and insist on the primacy of individual discretion, and our common humanity? … the drive to bring in formerly marginalized groups has obviously been one of the great achievements of our era… Wider inclusion has vastly improved public debate… And there are other times when collective thinking seems positively corrupting.

The mounting case for a single public-school system in Ontario
It is unequal: Jewish or Hindu or Muslim schools don’t get government funding. How is that fair…? It is expensive: running two giant school systems side by side… It is increasingly awkward: the values of Catholic authorities are bound to clash with changing views in the world… Most of all, it is backward… It is time to embrace that new reality and wind up the separate school system.

Social conservatives savour victory, thank immigrants
… for most social conservatives, religion is the motivating factor in their political mobilization. More than half a million Muslims immigrated to Canada in the 20 years to 2011… Almost 200,000 Filipino immigrants came to Canada in the five years to 2016, replenishing the pews of the country’s Catholic churches. As with most Canadian Muslims, these Filipino newcomers take their faith ultraseriously… “religious identity and practice are important and growing, in contrast to the broader secularizing trend in Canada.”

What is GBA+? The federal intersectional doctrine that governs everything now
It’s not just gender. The symbol… illustrates all the other “identity factors” that make up GBA+. The whole point of the program is to ensure that bureaucrats aren’t designing tone-deaf programs that accidentally ignore whole swaths of the population… Effectively, it’s a series of checks to make sure that policy makers aren’t just designing programs for people who think and act like themselves.

My activism is better than yours
If one wants to roll into police services meetings, or use one’s writing skills to critique the systems that have been built largely to reinforce oppression, then that is your right. For those of us who are using our professional networks to try to move the needle to a better world in our respective corners that, too, is our right. We should not begrudge the others’ approach. No one has the right to tell Justice McLeod or any another Black person how they should go about their community work.

The double standard of driving while black – in Canada
If you are a person of colour in Canada, you experience a profoundly different – and sometimes troubling – relationship with the law… Who you are doesn’t matter; it’s what you are. If you are black in Canada, you are subject to a different standard and, often, seemingly, different laws… We know that children are not born with prejudice. Racism is learned.

Georgian College Cancels Diploma in Homeopathy – and CBC News Violates all Journalistic Standards
Georgian College cancelled their new three-year diploma program for homeopathy after intense and aggressive attacks from a handful of medical doctors and ‘scientists’ representing special interest groups. The fact that a college can be bullied into cancelling an educational program by a handful of individuals is already very sad but it is even sadder that the CBC, our national news agency, engaged in such misinformed, biased and manipulative reporting…

It’s past time to end academic streaming
streaming — which puts kids into either academic or applied courses in high school — was supposed to be phased out in Ontario in 1999. Yet almost 20 years later, it’s still with us despite overwhelming evidence that it hurts rather than helps kids… studies also suggest teachers and guidance councillors actually push racialized and low-income students into taking applied courses. That perpetuates income-based disparities in educational outcomes.

A broken system is harming those with mental illness
The SIU is investigating how a man suffering from schizophrenia was killed at a police station. “They have absolutely no tools and no awareness to deal with people with mental disability…” … This pattern of racialized, mentally ill men dying at the hands of police and corrections officers must stop. Our elected officials must be held to account for a broken system that releases to us our most vulnerable in body bags.

Treatment of women in Canadian prisons a human rights travesty
“… CSC’s tool to assign women offenders to security levels was designed to assess men, not women. CSC also used this tool to refer women offenders to correctional programs, which is problematic since the tool was not designed for this purpose.” … “being classified as maximum security… limits your access to programs and services… It makes the experience of punishment more onerous and more punitive than it should be.”
