Canada ignores its own refugees [Indigenous people]
… unlike other refugees, they don’t get a basic income, a guaranteed safe roof over their head, support from groups to help them adjust, free food or business people paying their family’s way and giving them jobs over skilled Canadians. There is no help to start businesses. We don’t let them own houses or benefit economically from selling their resources, yet billion-dollar corporations can pillage these resources for off reserve benefit and profits.

Why free-marketers should support a new tax on health and dental plans — on one condition
The solution is a “tax swap,” whereby the government ceases treating workplace health and dental insurance as non-taxable and in turn uses the resulting revenues to establish a new refundable tax credit to help defray the costs of buying private insurance. The new tax credit might involve a redesign of the existing Medical Expense Tax Credit and would be available to all Canadians, irrespective of their employment circumstances, including in the form of a cash transfer for low-income citizens who don’t pay income taxes.

The tax man eyes the One Percenters in white coats as doctors’ pay keeps climbing
There are several ways in which small businesses can be used to shield income from personal income taxes. Since income taxes are only paid on the salaries the owners pay themselves, revenues can accumulate in CCPCs at the much lower small business tax rate that applies to profits less than the $500,000 threshold. There are several ways that this money can be accessed without paying taxes at the top personal income tax rate.

The cost of poverty affects us all
… the biggest barrier to ending poverty is the political orthodoxy we have lived by for the past 40 years: that good government is small government, that social programs must shrink, and that taxes are evil. It is over this period we have seen the most dramatic rise in poverty rates and income inequality… I’d be more than happy to pay more taxes if I knew that money would help my community to be healthier and happier.

The decline has been gradual, dating from the 2000s, but steady… • Women in Canada earn about $8,000 less per year than men doing work of equal value… • According to the United Nations, the Canadian gender gap in pay is twice the global average.

Did racism and sexism elect Trump?
… most women reject the narrow, intolerant identity politics of today’s feminism. The big thing the Democrats and the media don’t get is that class trumps gender. Most women are not preoccupied with the glass ceiling, or what percentage of vastly overpaid CEOs and elite board members happen to be women. What they want are decent part-time jobs so that they can afford to stay home with the kids.

Something Canadians can agree on: making life better for indigenous people
… more than one in two Canadians (54 per cent) cited raising the standard of living for indigenous peoples to the same level as other Canadians… followed by ensuring that government decisions and the laws of Canada respect the legal rights of indigenous peoples (25 per cent)… regardless of their age, gender or region.

Putting indigenous communities under suicide watch is no answer
The principal difference between healthy and unhealthy places… is “cultural continuity” – things like having title over land, self-government, control of health and education services, and strong cultural practices… suicide rates are far lower where people have a sense of belonging, self-worth and resiliency – the very things that the Indian Act, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop and other initiatives set out to destroy by isolating and fencing in nomadic groups, breaking up families, banning cultural practices and choking off traditional languages.

Realities faced by black Canadians are a national shame
… systemic discrimination has subjected black people to racial profiling by law enforcement, soaring incarceration rates, disproportionate poverty and poor health, the over-apprehension of black children by child welfare agencies and lower graduation rates. Black women… face a rate of poverty that is almost five times higher than that of white Canadian women, and are one of the fastest-growing groups in federal prisons. Underlying these injustices, the UN Working Group has made clear, is systemic racism.

Whiteness is a racial construct. It’s time to take it apart
Being white in Canada means a lower chance of developing cancer, hypertension and asthma. It also means being less likely to live in poverty… “White fragility,” … is the inability to cope with conversations about race that don’t protect individual white people’s sense of innocence… To hear an accusation of racism is to believe one’s basic morality is in question, which stirs up guilt and defensiveness, leading to anger and avoidance.
