Youth ‘aging out’ of care deserve better. The Ford government needs to deliver real reform

Some 12,000 children and youth live in foster homes and group homes in Ontario. About 2,000 of them turn 18 every year at which point they are usually forced to move out of their foster or group home to live independently, whether they’re ready or not. (There is financial assistance and other supports beyond 18 for some youth but it’s not universal and it’s not enough.)

How much COVID help did the Ford government give Ontario schools? An analysis reveals the real numbers

… in Ontario’s public and Catholic school boards, each school was able to add just 1.5 new staff members on average. In terms of teachers alone, that works out to less than one per school…. most of the funding announced by the province for COVID-19 help in schools actually came from school boards themselves or the federal government.

Laurentian left off of list of schools sharing in $106M pot of provincial dollars

“The crisis at Laurentian University would have been avoided if this government did its job and properly funded Ontario’s universities,” said OCUFA president RahulSapra. “Not only did the policies of this government push Laurentian over the edge, but Minister Romano knew about Laurentian’s precarious financial position at least six months beforehand, which gave him more than enough time to provide the university with the financial support it needed…”

Is Indigenous education in jeopardy at Laurentian University?

The prospect that the progress that has been made on Indigenous education since Indigenous Studies was established over 40 years ago will be wiped out is deeply saddening for an institution that, in partnership with the University of Sudbury, is among those few universities in Canada with the longest history of serving the educational needs of Indigenous communities.

Immediate Government Action Needed to Restore Access to Life-Saving, Needs-Based Mental Health Services to Kids in Ontario’s Youth Justice System

Without consultation, MCCSS has closed and reduced youth justice facilities across the province where vulnerable youth were receiving mental health services. Experts are clear that the rates of mental health issues in the youth justice population are as high as 90 per cent, with one quarter requiring a specialized “significant and immediate” treatment… half of the youth receiving specialized mental health treatment are Black, Indigenous and racialized… over half of these youth have attempted suicide

Doug Ford helped create a crisis for Ontario’s universities. Now it’s up to him to save them

Bleeding cash, Ontario’s universities are begging for a $500 million cash infusion to stay alive during COVID-19… The premier’s antics created the problem in the first place with that 10 per cent cut. A compensating 10 per cent top-up today is the price to pay to help universities get over the hump — through government funding, not a tuition increase (students cannot be expected to pay, given the disruptions of the pandemic).

Ontario Introduces New Anti-Human Trafficking Legislation

… we worked with a wide spectrum of stakeholders to establish a comprehensive $307 million Anti-Human Trafficking Strategy,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. “These legislative changes, if passed, will reinforce the strategy’s key objectives of supporting survivors, protecting children and youth, raising awareness among parents and community partners as well as dismantling criminal networks.”

COVID-19 changed everything, except Canada’s values of inclusiveness

Canadians are also increasingly sympathetic to vulnerable groups such as people with low incomes… support is growing in Canada for the idea of a basic income. Although that specific policy may not win the day, support for the principle suggests Canadians are growing more interested in a backstop for those at risk of being left behind… bucking trends in other countries, we have become less, and not more, polarized.
