Canada’s gender equality regression is a problem that must be solved

Sunday, December 4th, 2016

… Canada was reported late last month to have plunged from first place to 35th place in the global rankings of gender equality. The decline has been gradual, dating from the 2000s, but steady… • Women in Canada earn about $8,000 less per year than men doing work of equal value… • According to the United Nations, the Canadian gender gap in pay is twice the global average.

Did racism and sexism elect Trump?

Saturday, November 19th, 2016

… most women reject the narrow, intolerant identity politics of today’s feminism. The big thing the Democrats and the media don’t get is that class trumps gender. Most women are not preoccupied with the glass ceiling, or what percentage of vastly overpaid CEOs and elite board members happen to be women. What they want are decent part-time jobs so that they can afford to stay home with the kids.

Why Canada has avoided an anti-trade, anti-immigration backlash

Tuesday, November 1st, 2016

If declining incomes fuel anti-globalization… then what sets Canada apart is its recent income gains… More than 70 per cent of men aged 55 to 64 had full-time jobs in 1976; 20 years later, that ratio had fallen to less than 50 per cent. The only bright spot was provided by women. Even though their incomes were (and are) still less than men’s, they did see some income growth… enough to offset men’s losses

Realities faced by black Canadians are a national shame

Monday, October 31st, 2016

… systemic discrimination has subjected black people to racial profiling by law enforcement, soaring incarceration rates, disproportionate poverty and poor health, the over-apprehension of black children by child welfare agencies and lower graduation rates. Black women… face a rate of poverty that is almost five times higher than that of white Canadian women, and are one of the fastest-growing groups in federal prisons. Underlying these injustices, the UN Working Group has made clear, is systemic racism.

Philpott hints budget funding tied to provincial agreement on health accord

Wednesday, October 5th, 2016

Health Minister Jane Philpott is hinting that provinces won’t get a promised $3-billion infusion of health care funding in the coming federal budget unless they commit to spend it on home care… she wants that money to be in the Trudeau government’s second budget early next year. But she tied the budget to her upcoming negotiations with her provincial counterparts on a new health accord.

Fewer Canadian mothers work than those in many rich countries

Thursday, August 4th, 2016

A newly released internal federal analysis found fewer Canadian mothers — especially those with young children — participate in the job market compared to moms in many wealthy countries… “This is the most educated group of women in human history, in one of the best countries in the world, and they’re pulling out of work because of daycare. It’s ridiculous.” … evidence that jurisdictions with lower-cost child care, such as Quebec, has helped lift the workforce participation rates of women.

Who Knew the Nordics Were Individualist Romantics? [ The Nordic Theory of Everything: In Search of a Better Life ]

Monday, July 25th, 2016

Far from being docile servants of nanny states… the Nordics are bloody-minded individualists – because they can afford to be. That personal autonomy… means that no one has to stay in an abusive marriage (and risk death) because they need the abuser’s income. No one has to borrow from the Bank of Mom and Pop for the down payment on a condo, because everyone leaves post-secondary debt-free. And when Mom and Pop grow old, the kids don’t have to bear the brunt of caring for them: the whole society does that.

Judge’s decision on consent and rape sends a strong message

Monday, July 25th, 2016

Justice Zuker said things that have long needed to be said… He found that Gray’s prior sexual relationship was not an invitation to have sex without consent anymore than a married woman’s sexual relationship with her husband is… Nor did he find that passivity implies consent, citing studies of how victims often don’t resist, though they are not giving consent… Nor can consent be given in advance,

Ontario families on welfare to keep full federal child benefit

Saturday, June 18th, 2016

Ontario families on social assistance will not face provincial clawbacks when the new Canada Child Benefit kicks in on July 1… almost 260,000 children in families who rely on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program will benefit from the full amount of their federal child benefit payment. The new program replaces the current child benefit and supplement as well as the taxable Universal Child Care Benefit with a single non-taxable benefit. The average Canadian family is expected to receive an additional $2,300 a year under the new initiative.

Can women in power save the world?

Monday, June 13th, 2016

Quotas for women (or “targets,” which is a euphemism for quotas) are all the rage these days. Some people say they’re long overdue. I say they are an insult. Women are quite capable of high achievement on their own… We can tell our daughters they need special treatment to succeed. Or we can tell them they need smarts, stamina and guts. Which message would you rather send?
