Prisons Overwhelmed by Mental Illness: Watchdog

Sunday, February 23rd, 2014

As the Correctional Investigator of Canada… it’s [Howard Sapers] job to advocate for the rights of those inside the system. His most recent reports have slammed Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) for its lax approach to caring for elderly and chronically ill inmates, a growing segment of the prison population. He’s also been highly critical of the impact of Tory crime legislation on issues of overcrowding in prisons — in particular the criminalization of mental illness.

Nordic model best for prostitution law

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

Of the three options considered — legalizing, banning and adopting the so-called Nordic model — the last seems the least dire. It may actually deliver some benefits to prostitutes while prosecuting those who wish them harm… It is legal in Sweden to sell sex but not to buy it, and brothels and pimping are outlawed… This law… acknowledges an individual’s choice to sell sex. Yet it protects those who are trafficked and forced to work as sex workers… It is already illegal here to procure services from prostitutes under 18.

Court challenges show Harper governing in shadow of Trudeau’s Charter of Rights

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

Court challenges by First Nations are likely to stop the Northern Gateway pipeline. Judges have ruled mandatory sentencing for gun crimes violate the charter and refused to impose victim surcharge fees… immigration reforms were restrained by charter rulings on refugees’ rights. And on the key social questions of our era – same-sex marriage, prostitution, drugs, assisted suicide – the Harper government has been unwilling to stand down the judges…

Poverty costs Canada billions of dollars every year

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Taxpayers’ dollars (federal, provincial and local) are being wasted. Research by economists for the Ontario Association of Food Banks demonstrated that the cost of poverty in Canada is between $72-billion to $86-billion annually (health care, soup kitchens, shelters, police, corrections). Poverty could be eliminated for just a fraction of this amount.

Whatever the Supreme Court rules, it’s time to end prostitution

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Prostitution creates a second class of women – disproportionately disadvantaged women and underaged girls that can be bought and sold. The fact that most enter as minors, were sexually abused as kids, and many are Aboriginal is haunting. Legalizing prostitution would legitimize their sexual exploitation by men… decriminalizing/legalizing prostitution has been a flawed social experiment…

The law, and history, speak for themselves [wife abuse]

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

… a woman is killed every six days in Canada by her male partner or former partner. Family courts cannot be relied upon to keep batterers away from women’s children — far from it. Welfare rates and policies force women back into the arms of abusers, our shelters are bursting, turning away women and children every day in this country, and the independent women’s movement… is under attack by government and in the media.

CAUT Statement on December 6 [Violence against Women]

Friday, December 6th, 2013

This past twelve months we have witnessed our federal government’s continued failure to develop a national action plan to end violence against women in Canada. Despite support at the meeting of provincial ministers this past summer, the Conservative government has yet to agree to launch a national investigation into the missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in our country.

Legal Aid Ontario releases pioneering mental health strategy

Wednesday, December 4th, 2013

One of the biggest barriers to justice is a mental disability. No agency is more aware of this than Legal Aid Ontario (LAO), whose clients are disproportionately impoverished, underhoused, criminalized and incarcerated. Approximately one in three have mental health problems… [Ryan Fritsch’s] blueprint sets out a four-step program to knock down the legal barriers confronting Ontarians with mental disabilities…

Target the poor, not the rich, for real solutions to income inequality

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

… the problem… is that too many people have too little money. Even working Canadians have too little money. Many of them are victims of decades of driving down wage rates as a way of finding efficiency in the production of goods and services, leading to low levels of family income… Here are five ideas that would go a long way to addressing the problem:

Tories’ tough-on-crime agenda means jammed jails stuffed with minority Canadians

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

Since the Conservatives came to power in 2006, the overall prison population has grown by 7%, to its highest level ever… the entire increase can be accounted for by rising numbers of Aboriginal, black, Asian and other visible minorities. “You cannot reasonably claim to have a just society with incarceration rates like these”… “incarcerating people has little to do with helping victims”.
