History suggests Justin Trudeau’s national child care proposal is already doomed. Could Doug Ford be its saviour?
Monday, September 28th, 2020
The pandemic and its dire impact on women’s participation in the workforce have given the file more impetus than at any other time in recent history… Trudeau’s cabinet similarly boasts a sizable number of women who are liable to hold their government’s feet to the fire, starting with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland… Who knows? Ford could be as instrumental in securing a more productive outcome to the latest round of child-care politics as the billions of dollars Ottawa (again) promises to put on the table.

It’s time to get rid of civil juries
Wednesday, September 16th, 2020
The Ontario government should take steps to effect much-needed changes to the civil jury system. It is possible to provide injury victims with timely and fair access to the civil courts, while decreasing the civil case backlog. The right to a civil jury should be reserved for a small subset of cases, such as those that trigger the public interest or where community values are at stake.

Ontario and Ottawa keep failing on reforms to solitary confinement
Saturday, August 29th, 2020
The debilitating effects of solitary confinement on prisoners’ mental health are well known. There’s a reason the UN defines stints in solitary beyond 15 days as torture. It should be used only as a last resort and not, as it so often is, to put a troubled inmate out of sight and out of mind, or as a way to maintain security in the face of under-staffing or lack of appropriate mental health care inside institutions.

Home care is key to improving care for all seniors
Thursday, July 30th, 2020
Ontario’s home care system delivers more care to seniors than any other part of the health care system, which is why publicly funded home care workers must be supported in the same way as long-term care workers… to reduce the number of non-essential visits to hospitals that can overwhelm our health system… To stabilize the entire health system, home care workers must be paid at parity with those in long-term care.

How Doug Ford failed our long-term care system
Thursday, July 23rd, 2020
… the numbers 9 and 34 are cited as how many long-term-care beds were created in Ontario during Doug Ford’s first 18 months as premier… 35 is the number of in-depth reports over the past 20 years recommending ways to improve Ontario’s beleaguered long-term care system… And the number 38,400 is how many Ontario residents are on waiting lists right now for a bed in a long-term care facility… there can be “no excuse for a government not intervening actively, systematically, rigorously” to improve the sector.

Sunday, July 5th, 2020
Typically, after care, foster kids experience: low academic achievement, poverty, homelessness, criminal justice system involvement, early parenthood, poor physical and mental health, and loneliness… there is no tracking of life outcomes after care… The sector needs our leadership — 40 years of academic research on youth outcomes and a century of troubling history prove it.

Canada’s bail system is broken and unjust. The Supreme Court shows how to fix it
Friday, June 26th, 2020
The Court says the default position should be to automatically grant bail with no conditions, other than that the person attend their next court date. Other conditions should only be imposed to the degree they address three questions: “Is this person a flight risk; will their release pose a risk to public protection and safety; or is their release likely to result in a public loss of confidence in the administration of justice?”

Thoughts on forestalling the coming childcare crisis
Wednesday, June 24th, 2020
… the childcare sector requires an immediate injection of capital and a rapid expansion of space(s) in this critical phase of re-opening the economy… the Multilateral Early Learning and Childcare Framework… should immediately be boosted to pay some or all of the costs of a temporary injection of much-needed capital… provinces should actively support childcare providers to make use of community spaces that can accommodate satellite locations for childcare
