How ‘One-Stop’ Care Lifts New Moms from Addiction

Friday, March 14th, 2014

Twenty years ago… pregnant women living with addiction would arrive at hospital emergency rooms in labour, having received no prenatal care. A social worker would usually apprehend the baby immediately following birth… But the popularity of… multidisciplinary community health programs has grown, and the reality is much different for such mothers today… Outside cities, however, programs like these simply don’t exist

Social networks add layer of complexity to social work

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

The uncharted territory around social media poses many challenges for workers, and led the Canadian Association of Social Workers to draw up Social Media Guidelines, published in January this year. It focuses on ethical concerns… They need to be careful and professional and be cognizant of who has access to their information. And where do you draw the line when it comes to tracking people?

Nightmare? I want a daycare on Elm Street

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

… the acute shortage of daycare spots, and the cost of those that do exist, forces parents to step onto a rickety scaffold… New legislation to tighten controls has been introduced in Ontario, but that’s not going to do anything for the crisis of access or affordability… A comprehensive program might be a tricky sell, considering the up-front costs, but not when you weigh the benefits, both in terms of children’s development and women’s participation in the work force.

Regulate unlicensed daycares, but keep a light touch

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

It is precisely because so many families choose [home daycare] – 80 per cent of children in daycare are at unregulated facilities – that government should take a closer look at how they operate, to see if there are any risks they pose to children’s welfare… thousands of unregulated home daycares in Ontario essentially operate in a regulatory vacuum. They are not subject to the same standards or inspections as their licensed counterparts.

Queen’s Park must strengthen Ontario’s child care supports

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Unfortunately, only 40 per cent of people in Ontario who want a midwife can get one, and in many places in Ontario, midwifery care is not an option at all… If we can find a child care spot in a licensed centre it could cost between $1500 and $2000 per month.
The cost of child care is shocking,.. this is not an option for the one in 10 minimum wage workers in Ontario who barely earn $1500 each month.

Prisons Overwhelmed by Mental Illness: Watchdog

Sunday, February 23rd, 2014

As the Correctional Investigator of Canada… it’s [Howard Sapers] job to advocate for the rights of those inside the system. His most recent reports have slammed Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) for its lax approach to caring for elderly and chronically ill inmates, a growing segment of the prison population. He’s also been highly critical of the impact of Tory crime legislation on issues of overcrowding in prisons — in particular the criminalization of mental illness.

2014 rent increase to be second-lowest in two decades 60

Sunday, December 29th, 2013

Ontario will cap rent increases next year at the second lowest rate in more than two decades. Tenants who live in buildings completed on or before Nov. 1, 1991 will see a maximum hike in their rent of 0.8% in 2014 which works out to $6.40 on an $800 monthly rent… There are exceptions for property owners who can prove to the Landlord and Tenant Act that they need higher rents to cover, as an example, the cost of a substantial renovation.

Ontario’s new dental plan for youth is good, but could be great

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

… the government is streamlining a patchwork of six low-income dental care programs (those on social assistance are automatically covered) into one major program called Healthy Smiles. It’s also raising the income eligibility level so that more young people (under the age of 17) can sit in a public-health dentist’s chair… But… There’s little value in a program that doesn’t reach the people it aims to help.

Ontario is finally cracking down on rogue unlicensed daycare operators

Thursday, December 5th, 2013

… even with passage of this act, high-quality, affordable child care won’t be available to thousands of Ontario families who need it. A bold new investment of provincial and federal money is required, like the $1.1-billion national child-care program recklessly killed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Still, Wynne is right to demand higher standards of the child-care operations we have.

Legal Aid Ontario releases pioneering mental health strategy

Wednesday, December 4th, 2013

One of the biggest barriers to justice is a mental disability. No agency is more aware of this than Legal Aid Ontario (LAO), whose clients are disproportionately impoverished, underhoused, criminalized and incarcerated. Approximately one in three have mental health problems… [Ryan Fritsch’s] blueprint sets out a four-step program to knock down the legal barriers confronting Ontarians with mental disabilities…
