Young grads need to brush up on 3 R’s, employers say

Monday, February 22nd, 2016

… the idea of entrance and exit tests of literacy, numeracy and problem-solving has value. “Sampling students at the front end would be useful to give us an idea of the state of people coming in, and offer immediate, focused help to get the student up to standard… It also would give professors a greater consciousness about the importance of these transferable skills, and students could use it at the end of their degree to show employers the skills they have.”

Ottawa must do more for Indigenous children

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

… the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal’s… denunciated Canada for its long-standing racial discrimination against Indigenous children… Even at the height of regional suicide epidemics we see a bureaucratic lethargy or indifference that is chilling… The tribunal may have ruled on the discriminatory application of child welfare services, but that is just one example of the systemic mean-spiritedness that runs through every department that deals with Indigenous Canadians.

Thursday, February 18th, 2016

The issue of sex trafficking of indigenous and vulnerable women and girls is part of a broader issue of women’s inequality and violence against women. In Canada, we continue to turn a blind eye to attitudes of entitlement that allow the buying and selling of women and girls. We have an obligation to recognize the fundamental evil facts and act on them… We need to ask ourselves who is buying women and girls and end this practice, because without demand, there is no crime.

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

The Board of Governors of Laurentian University announced today the closure of the Barrie campus… “It is unfortunate that the plan the Ontario Government was seeking to impose for the future of higher education in Simcoe County has led to this announcement… That plan would have seen unprecedented government interference into the university sector. Universities must have the freedom to determine and decide about the best options for program choice and how these should be delivered.”

Funding for Katimavik should be included in upcoming budget

Monday, February 15th, 2016

… the national exchange and volunteer program was succeeding brilliantly in its mandate to prepare young people to be responsible citizens who make positive change in their own lives and communities until its $16 million in funding was axed in 2012 by the Harper government… It may have been born in the spirit of the anything-goes 1970s, but over the following decades it more than proved its worth… Let’s hope… Katimavik will rise from the ashes. Our young people are worth it.

Stop treating sexual health as women’s responsibility

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

Who is getting women pregnant? Who is transmitting infections? Who is raping intoxicated women? In most cases, it’s men. We know that sexual violence is extremely common: the CDC estimates that at least one in five women is sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Estimates are closer to one in two for bisexual women and transgender people. The assailant is typically an opportunistic acquaintance who’s found a way to exploit his social power, and not an unknown brute in a dark alley.

How to fix Ontario’s fragmented child welfare system

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016

While greater coordination can be achieved through shared services and further amalgamations of children’s aid societies, the greatest gains would come from local service planning and co-ordination across levels of government, and sectors such as child welfare, youth justice, education and developmental services. Simcoe County’s Child, Youth and Family Services Coalition is an example of integrated planning and joint work to improve services.
