Most people in jail today are innocent

Wednesday, November 4th, 2015

The homeless, addicted and mentally ill (who are often all three) are more likely to end up in jail, innocent or not, and more likely to be a victim of a crime, than the rest of us…. the bail system is all about public fears, and, I hate to say it, self-preservation by the decision-makers… The legal test for bail in Canada is similarly organized around risk aversion: risk of flight, risk of harm and then more risk analysis. Protecting the public from risk is a mug’s game that’s ended up jailing a lot of innocent people.

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

Toronto’s 20-year poverty reduction strategy includes 17 recommendations and 71 actions “to advance equity, opportunity and prosperity for all Toronto residents.” It also features 17… “indicators” to track progress on the strategy’s six areas for action, including housing stability, access to services, transit equity, access to healthy food, quality jobs with livable incomes and systemic change. But with no annual or long-term funding targets…

Ontario’s newest trend: living wage employers

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

The living wage has become the hottest conversation among employers who believe their mission is not just to make money, but to also reflect their corporate values… they’re a refreshing counterpoint to the perennial conversation stopper whenever any province in Canada decides it’s time to raise the minimum wage. Not every business wants to profit off of a low-wage economy. A growing number of employers are signing up to do the right thing.

Greed is not the only driver of economic growth

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

“… social entrepreneurs… confront the societal structures that leave too many behind, roll up their sleeves and set about the hard, exhilarating and important work of transforming what is into what can and should be.” Getting Beyond Better is not a how-to guide for young visionaries seeking to launch and sustain socially responsible businesses. Most of them learn by doing, help each other and rely on their energy, ingenuity and determination to prove a double bottom line — doing well and doing good — can work.

Ontario sets 10-year deadline to end homelessness

Friday, October 30th, 2015

Due to the complexity and many faces of homelessness, the problem is best fought at the local level, with the help of non-profit and private-sector partners… Looking toward the 10-year goal, municipalities will be expected to have local strategies to end homelessness and a common approach to collecting, measuring and tracking data… “… we now have three levels of government that are, in general, on the same page…”

The time has come for universal pharmacare

Thursday, October 29th, 2015

… in spite of our hopes that it could be a first step to real pharmacare, catastrophic coverage appears to be giving some governments the excuse not to do the hard work to make coverage truly universal for Canadians and affordable to taxpayers… Neither catastrophic drugs nor the Quebec model can deliver all four critical elements of a universal pharmacare program… If better is always possible, the time to do better is now.

Put democracy and fairness at top of Liberal agenda

Sunday, October 25th, 2015

Ottawa has the means to leverage spending in a more productive and equitable direction. The centre has identified more than $25 billion in foregone taxes and giveaways to corporations and the affluent that it argues could be put to better use. Ottawa could boost the Working Income Tax Benefit, refundable tax credits, and the Guaranteed Income Supplement and Old Age Security. Improve Employment Insurance. Support provincial poverty reduction strategies. And invest in child care, transit, housing and higher education.

Ontario government botches rollout of welfare technology

Sunday, October 25th, 2015

… a pricetag that has already swelled by 20 per cent; the fact that department has fumbled the implementation of programs by two different suppliers; reports from local caseworkers that the system still has serious deficiencies – suggest the changeover was poorly planned and executed… The 566,800 Ontarians who depend on social assistance are the province’s most vulnerable residents. More than half have disabilities. It is bad enough that the government doesn’t provide enough financial support to meet their basic needs; to subject them to needless bureaucratic misery is just heartless.

What the Liberal victory could mean for your pension plan

Sunday, October 25th, 2015

The Liberals have promised to restore the future eligibility age for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement from 67 to 65… The question remains whether to continue with increased benefits for those who defer collecting OAS to later ages. The Liberals have also promised to raise GIS benefits for single low-income seniors. This move can be expected to lift some of our most vulnerable seniors out of poverty… The most challenging element facing the Liberals involves the Canada Pension Plan…
