Natives deserve same property rights as all Canadians
Friday, August 24th, 2012
9 August 2012
On reserves, land is owned by the Crown, which in turn permits First Nations to use it for their collective use. Houses typically are built and maintained by bands or bureaucrats — with no economic input from (or equity for) the occupants. It is an artificial, Soviet-style arrangement… this isn’t because Ottawa is nickel-and-diming Canada’s native reserves. Rather, it’s a function of the perverse economic incentives facing the natives who live in those homes.

Housing crisis in Attawapiskat still isn’t solved
Wednesday, August 15th, 2012
2 August 2012
the federal government has never bothered much about the root causes of anything on First Nations reserves. That’s why many remain chock-a-block with poverty and hopelessness… Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who did his best to convince Canadians that the band council was to blame for the housing crisis because they had somehow mismanaged funds, was way off base. All he did was create even more distrust… To this day, the housing crisis in Attawapiskat – and dozens of other northern native communities – remains largely unsolved.

It’s time Canada realized its promise on partnership with indigenous peoples
Friday, August 10th, 2012
30 July 2012
While one can invoke arguments of morality and charity to justify ensuring that indigenous youth receive an education of as high a quality as that received by non-Indigenous youth, promoting parity in this generation will be based solely on economic benefits… As much attention needs to be focused on Indigenous labour as is given to immigrant labour. It also makes no sense to have so many hundreds of thousands of people maintained in an increasingly expensive multigenerational state of dependency that is so destructive to health and well-being.

Small numbers are a hard reality for first nations
Wednesday, August 8th, 2012
25 July 2012
Sheer math would suggest that aboriginals are over-governed, with too many chiefs for very small populations. But then that is part of the Indian reality: very small populations on scattered reserves, with different cultural traditions, struggling to keep native languages alive… on land bases that range in size and quality. No matter the rhetoric of self-affirmation, populations of a few hundred people, or a few thousand for that matter, will struggle to provide even some of the services of a modern state, which is what the word “sovereignty” is all about, in practical if not rhetorical terms.

Sinclair inquiry to look at social conditions surrounding child’s death
Wednesday, August 8th, 2012
24 July 2012
… “this inquiry needs to extend beyond the strict parameters of the operations of the child welfare system… The child welfare system alone cannot be expected to address the underlying social conditions which lead children into being in need of protection.”… those social conditions include poverty, limited economic and employment opportunities, homelessness and substance abuse.

Atleo needs to go back to the beginning
Wednesday, August 8th, 2012
20 July 2012
[Shawn A-in-chut Atleo] has the misfortune of serving as the country’s highest-level First Nations spokesman coincident with the term of arguably the most aboriginal-indifferent federal government in decades… Children attending on-reserve schools receive, on average, $3,500 less funding than other Canadian students. First Nations child welfare agencies receive, on average, 22 per cent less funding to do their important work than similar provincial agencies across the country… It will be Shawn Atleo’s task… to hold all Canadians… to live up to the letter of their own constitutional and court laws…

Canadians want results for cash: poll
Monday, July 2nd, 2012
July 1, 2012
… frustration is aimed at all levels of government, including aboriginal leadership, for an “ongoing inability to get started in modern society that exists within the aboriginal community.” … the only way out of poverty is to focus on economic development: looking at ways for the community to generate its own revenue, business plans, education and skills development… In response to the statement “Canada’s Aboriginal People receive too much support from Canadian taxpayers,” younger and more well educated respondents were less likely to agree than other age and education groups.

Crime, victim
Friday, June 29th, 2012
June 29, 2012
Research by the Centre for Race and Culture indicates that immigrants and non-white people (racialized) do not commit more crime than mainstream Canadians with similar life circumstances… Crime is higher for those who are unemployed, have low levels of education, come from single parent families, or live in poverty. These are all exacerbated by the discrimination that immigrant, refugee, and aboriginal people experience. Why do racialized people consistently receive a lower quality of education, and have a more difficult time finding employment and income levels that are commensurate with their education and experience?

CHRC… more relevant than ever
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012
Jun 19, 2012
Of the 1,914 human rights complaints under the federal Act in 2011, only one complaint regarding hate on the Internet was given consideration. The overwhelming majority of complaints deal with allegations of discrimination on the grounds of disability or age… Today, more than 10% of the human rights complaints received by the Canadian Human Rights Commission are from aboriginal people. Such a surge is reasonable to expect, after decades of neglect.

Closing the ‘achievement gap’ for Toronto’s aboriginal students
Monday, June 18th, 2012
Jun 16 2012
Teachers don’t know much about aboriginal history and culture and admit they haven’t been taught how to connect with students who can be shy or suspicious. Yet a provincial pilot project discovered that when aboriginal children do get extra attention and encouragement, and lesson plans that reflect their lives, they become engaged… After two years, the results were so promising that the board will continue to bankroll the push even though provincial funding has ended.
