A new bill is a good start. But gay and trans people need much more
While federal human-rights tribunals have consistently found that transgender discrimination is captured by protected categories such as “sex,” adding “gender identity” and “gender expression” makes this interpretation crystal clear. Perhaps more importantly, the new legislation serves a crucial symbolic function – it tells members of transgender communities that they can use the law to respond to pervasive inequality.

It’s time for Canada to right historic wrongs against LGBTQ Community
It also high time for Justin Trudeau to right two historic wrongs. First, he should pardon thousands of gay men who were convicted of gross indecency before homosexual acts were decriminalized in 1969. Their only crime was being who they were… We apologize to remind each other of when we fell short in the past, so that we do not fall short in some other way going forward… With this new law protecting the rights of transgender people, Mr. Trudeau has advanced the cause of equality for Canada’s LGBTQ community.

Response to Tax Dodging by Rich Will Show Trudeau’s True Colours
Better to have the justice department prosecute the small fish and cut deals with the wealthy. But this isn’t justice — it’s expediency. The CRA and the justice department have a moral obligation to the Canadian people to name and prosecute those who have grossly and arrogantly flouted the law… Regrettably, there is a distinct lack of public outrage at this disgusting display of privilege, contempt for the public interest and for the law.

What we need to know about neoliberalism (before it’s too late)
We expected that governments would act promptly to clamp regulatory restraints on corporate wrongdoers, constrain free markets, re-impose much higher business taxes, and punish financial felons with prison terms and huge fines. Instead, governments have allowed corporations to continue their iniquitous misconduct, and even lavished them with further tax cuts and subsidies… since the politicians we vote for are the only ones with the authority to stop the titans of capitalism from further impoverishing billions, worsening inequality, and eventually wrecking the planet, we find ourselves at an impasse.

Proper housing is a crucial a health issue
Social factors, like housing, income and wealth, educational background and race are more powerful determinants of health outcomes than our behaviours, genes or even the health-care system. And yet, experts in health are often trained to focus on the provision of health-care services, often sending patients back into the social and economic conditions that made them sick… As health-care providers, we know the actual prescription needed is safe, secure and affordable housing.

Justin Trudeau’s true tests are still to come [child care / pharmacare]
… no single initiative would make such a big difference in the lives of Canadian families as universal, quality, affordable child care… This issue is urgent. The OECD has ranked us dead last among peer nations for child care. / … not only would national pharmacare ensure that all Canadians have access to the drugs they need, it would also save billions of dollars… every other country with universal health care also covers the cost of prescription medicine… 90 per cent of Canadians support the idea

Opioid epidemic requires national response
The opioid epidemic sweeping across the country is affecting people from all walks of life — the young and the old, the wealthy and the homeless… Thus far, some Canadian provinces have acted in an isolated fashion to stem this public health crisis, but as the death toll continues to rise, the time for a national response is now… addictions… must be thought of as mental health issues, rather than issues of personal responsibility, crime and blame.

Make ‘Katelynn’s Principle’ part of Ontario law
