… non-profit organizations are getting a financial break with a five-year freeze on their Workplace Safety and Insurance Board premiums as the Ontario government agency lowers its average premium rate for all employers by 17 per cent. The freeze will help almost 2,700 non-profits while another 1,600 will see premiums drop…

The right is becoming radicalized. Many of the movement’s loudest leaders and members are strangers to truth, reason and empathy. … from their denial of climate change reality to their inhumane treatment of immigrants, refugees and other minorities. But right-wing commentators and parties across the world, including in Canada, have also demonstrated this irrationality and absence of empathy.

The Public Health Agency of Canada recently announced it has awarded a strategic fund to Autism Ontario to launch Mental Health Matters, a mental health program for adults on the autism spectrum and their caregivers that will be delivered in partnership with CMHA Ontario, McMaster Autism Research Team (MacART), SAAAC Autism Centre and the York ASD Partnership.

Legislation passed in June requires Ottawa to advance a human rights-based approach to housing that prioritizes the needs of the most vulnerable and requires regular reporting to Parliament on progress toward meeting its housing strategy goals… “It promotes diverse communities, and builds housing that is sustainable, accessible, mixed income, mixed use and that is fully integrated into the community — close to transit, close to work and close to public services.

… the CRA says more than 835,000 returns were filed by people who are homeless, Indigenous, newcomers, seniors or disabled. The boost is double those seen in previous years, before the Liberals increased annual spending on the “community volunteer income-tax program” to $13 million in the 2018 budget… “It’s a different program and we get to see the direct impact that we have on lifting people out of poverty.”

Ordered populism… has four key conditions: A declining middle class, wage stagnation and hyper-concentration of wealth at the very top of the system; Major shifts in social values which see more progressive values displacing traditional social conservative values which… produce a cultural backlash by those seeing themselves falling victim to loss of identity and privilege; A growing sense of external threat…; Declining trust in public institutions plus a rise in ideological polarization. All those conditions are present in Canada. They predominate among less-educated males

Many of my patients have legal needs that require expert intervention to maintain their social and medical stability… for issues ranging from family discord to accessing disability supports… Neighbourhood legal clinics… are now facing crippling funding cuts… When people are denied the ability to advocate for their legal rights, they are left with high levels of stress, in worse poverty, and in increasingly vulnerable situations. This leaves them in poorer health and puts a higher demand on the health system.
