Toronto anti-poverty plan reaches final hurdle

Toronto’s 20-year poverty reduction strategy includes 17 recommendations and 71 actions “to advance equity, opportunity and prosperity for all Toronto residents.” It also features 17… “indicators” to track progress on the strategy’s six areas for action, including housing stability, access to services, transit equity, access to healthy food, quality jobs with livable incomes and systemic change. But with no annual or long-term funding targets…

A Liberal Majority Government – What Does This Mean for Food Security?

During the election campaign, the Liberal Party platform put forward several promises that are well in line with Food Banks Canada’s policy recommendations to reduce the need for food banks in Canada… the Liberals have promised to: – Combine several tax credits for families with children into the new Canada Child Benefit… Invest an additional $200 million in education and training for unemployed Canadians…

Ontario sets 10-year deadline to end homelessness

Due to the complexity and many faces of homelessness, the problem is best fought at the local level, with the help of non-profit and private-sector partners… Looking toward the 10-year goal, municipalities will be expected to have local strategies to end homelessness and a common approach to collecting, measuring and tracking data… “… we now have three levels of government that are, in general, on the same page…”

Prime Minister’s Office ordered halt to refugee processing

The Prime Minister’s Office directed Canadian immigration officials to stop processing one of the most vulnerable classes of Syrian refugees this spring and declared that all UN-referred refugees would require approval from the Prime Minister, a decision that halted a critical aspect of Canada’s response to a global crisis… Canada issued visas to only 308 UN-referred refugees from Syria through the first eight months of this year…

Supply free Wi-Fi as a city service

… there’s a new effort underway to make free wireless Internet service an integral part of Toronto’s municipal infrastructure… The goal is to eliminate an income-based “digital divide” that hinders many of the poor from accessing information via high-speed Internet. It would also boost Toronto’s reputation as “tech-savvy jurisdiction” and be a boon to tourists exploring the city, as well as to Torontonians at large… it’s become a fundamental piece of municipal infrastructure.

Federal Surplus Comes with Social Costs, Critics Say

The surplus has been attributed in part to government “lapses” in spending, in which departments do not spend their full allotted budgets for the year… the Ottawa Citizen reported the government underspent by $8.7 billion in total across government departments last year… National Defence, Aboriginal Affairs and Veterans Affairs all saw spending lapses… In the meantime, economic growth leading to employment and other benefits are delayed

Canada’s refugee policies are mean and incompetent

With the cuts to refugee health care and their amendments to the refugee law, the government has gone to great lengths to discourage asylum seekers from coming to Canada… There is a meanness and incompetence to Canada’s refugee and immigration policies that we have never seen in previous governments, no matter which party held office. It is unprecedented for the Canadian government to do so little in the face of such a grave disaster.

Toronto must do better for people with disabilities

… government must squarely face the finding of its own Independent Review that 10 years of implementing our accessibility law has not made a significant difference in the lives of people with disabilities. Ontario is not on schedule for full accessibility by 2025, the deadline imposed by the Disability Act… By listening to us, keeping commitments to us, and effectively implementing and enforcing the Disabilities Act, Ontario could become a world leader in accessibility.

At last, a success story at Toronto Community Housing

… the building, with 132 bachelor apartments housing almost exclusively single men, many of whom struggle with addictions and mental health problems, is now a bright example of turnaround tactics.
The reversal of fortune was fueled in part by the agency spending $719,000 on repairs and maintenance and hiring a security guard and cleaner… But what really changed things for the better was having two social service agencies set up in the lobby…

Help turn empty schools into community hubs

The advisory group… made 28 recommendations to try and break down the “silos” that prevent community groups from co-operating to buy schools. The report also highlights the need for provincial ministries to cut bureaucratic red tape and work together to take advantage of the opportunity these schools present to house various services under one roof… Low enrollment can mean a school may face closure even though it contains a well-used daycare or recreational facilities.
