Poverty gives way to inequality and the Great Frustration

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

Oct. 20 2012
Inequality has increased – and when that happens, economists have shown that there’s a corresponding collapse of social mobility, the ability to escape your income group for a higher one… When the rich get richer, the poor usually get poorer. But the converse isn’t true: Countries with strong redistributive systems and free economies are usually both wealthy and equal.

Venerable Economist sounds alarm over growing inequality

Friday, October 19th, 2012

October 18, 2012
Government leaders continue to turn a blind eye to disparities among their people and a deaf ear to voices warning that a hyper-wealthy minority is taking too much of the nation’s income. Corporate executives continue to argue that any measure impeding their ability to produce wealth would do profound harm to the economy… The Economist’s thoughtful analysis won’t change their minds. But it will get their attention.

Wealth Gap Is a Health Hazard for Rich, Too

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Oct. 15, 2012
… a very small number of well-tailored pickpockets were pilfering much of what we made. Then they had the chutzpah to blame us for not succeeding the way our parents and grandparents had… the report proposes improving matters by creating good jobs, improving income supports such as employment insurance and the Canada Pension Plan, expanding public services, and making taxes fairer.

Wealth, not health care, extends life

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Oct.12, 2012
It has been estimated at least three quarters of the increases in life expectancy in the developed nations over the past 100 years has been due to increased prosperity and improved nutrition, housing, sanitation and work safety. In fact, how much a society spends on health care has not been found to be directly related to any health outcome tested… The effect of income appears to be stronger than many other variables that affect life expectancy

Underfunding first nations a losing strategy

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

October 5, 2012
Rather than work with First Nations groups, it [the Harper government] is in confrontation mode. It fiddles with the math and blames the victim. Duncan also left the veiled threat that legislation would be forthcoming, without making it clear what that would be or how it would affect our treaties and aboriginal rights. Despite all the smoke and mirrors, education remains seriously underfunded in First Nations communities.

What kind of Canada do we want?

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

October 08, 2012
… Canadians widely agree: we are facing a serious and growing problem. A large majority of Canadians — including a majority of Conservative voters — are willing to pay higher taxes to protect our social programs… The federal government controls many of the key levers — income security programs, a progressive income tax system, and transfers to the provinces — that we need to combat inequality. Canadians should demand action.

Young Canadians facing deep declines in standard of living

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Sep 28 2012
While policies that can create minimum wages and some social housing are important, they do little to help the typical 38-year-old today who has debt that is more than 100 per cent of household income because of housing and tuition costs. A generation ago, the norm was around 40 per cent. So we must look to other policy mechanisms that will reduce time and income pressures as younger Canadians start jobs, careers and homes.

A matter of justice, without delay

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Sep. 28 2012
… crime rates are the lowest in decades… with youth crime falling faster than overall crime. And yet, less crime has not translated into lower court costs. Crime is down 33 per cent in the past six years, but criminal justice costs are up 35 per cent in the same period.

Forget Occupy, the real divide is generational

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

Sep. 21 2012
Those under 45 are squeezed – squeezed for time at home, and squeezed for money because they’re burdened with higher student debt and paying higher housing prices with lower wages. And when they choose to have kids, they are squeezed for child-care services, which often cost the equivalent of another mortgage… Championing social policy for generations facing tough times is a big part of Canada’s legacy.

‘Family values’ versus public education

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

September 17, 2012
We cannot say we want schools to be equitable for some but not others. Public schools are exactly that — public schools. They must be equitable and represent the diversity that exists in our society. Equity must be equally applied to all stakeholders, for all of our neighbours and fellow citizens… No community should expect to impose a burden on public schools that, as a system, we cannot and should not bear.
