“Autism is rooted in genetics, this much is certain” The answer to autism has a better chance of being found sooner rather than later because of a new way of looking at research that’s pioneered in Ontario and already drawing attention internationally… POND brings together teams of scientists, doctors, engineers, patient advocacy groups and biotech companies to create a network for clinical trials across Ontario that specializes in childhood neurodevelopmental disorders…

A welcome reform is being proposed by Campaign 2000, a national anti-poverty coalition. It involves cancelling the universal $100 monthly payout and the two tax credits beyond the reach of the very poor and giving all the money saved to the poverty-stricken… The universal $100 payout and assorted tax breaks introduced by this government have a different and obvious goal — buying middle class votes.

The well-meaning Danes discovered that jacking up the tax on junk food did reduce sales in Denmark. But that was because people were heading to Germany or Sweden to buy it at lower prices… The OMA estimated that 31.5 per cent of children and teens are overweight or obese, up from 14 to 18 per cent in the 1980s… Presumably Ontarians can be just as innovative Danes in finding ways to get food that’s bad for them.

Government leaders continue to turn a blind eye to disparities among their people and a deaf ear to voices warning that a hyper-wealthy minority is taking too much of the nation’s income. Corporate executives continue to argue that any measure impeding their ability to produce wealth would do profound harm to the economy… The Economist’s thoughtful analysis won’t change their minds. But it will get their attention.

… The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy… discovered that the failure of the poorest kids was not preordained. Nearly 20 per cent of youngsters who started out as vulnerable, or in need of help, ended up meeting Grade 3 expectations… with the right types of interventions, we can work to ensure that over time there are more positive deflections than negative ones.

Who among us hasn’t known someone forever changed by a head injury, or seen a relative transformed by the ravages of dementia. It’s a major problem in our healthcare system, and one that isn’t getting any better… If Ontario can afford to put Ms. Arthurs in the wrong facility, it surely can afford to keep her in the right one. Bureaucratic silos and institutional fiefdoms must not be allowed to deny patients and families the care they need.

… the burden of mental illness and addictions in Ontario is greater than that of all cancers and infectious diseases put together. But… families reporting they receive less care and support than friends and neighbours with physical ailments. The lack of a national or provincial strategy — never mind stable funding —for helping children of mentally ill parents means community organizations nationwide are collaborating and cobbling together scarce mental-health resources to support them.

Rather than work with First Nations groups, it [the Harper government] is in confrontation mode. It fiddles with the math and blames the victim. Duncan also left the veiled threat that legislation would be forthcoming, without making it clear what that would be or how it would affect our treaties and aboriginal rights. Despite all the smoke and mirrors, education remains seriously underfunded in First Nations communities.

The federal government’s tough-on-crime agenda is “excessively punitive” for youth and is a step backwards for Canada’s child rights record, says… The UN committee on… Rights of the Child. The Harper government’s Bill C-10 — an omnibus crime bill that includes stiffer penalties for youth and makes it easier to try them as adults — no longer conforms to the child rights convention or other international standards.

The use of digital technology in higher education has promoted ignorance, not knowledge, and severely degraded basic reading, writing and thinking skills. It’s time to hit the off button… whether these uses contribute anything to the main goal of higher education: to improve students’ minds and characters by helping them to learn facts, debate ideas and understand the world better. The answer, for the most part, is no — study after study shows that digital technology has dumbed down higher education.
