Economic analysis of child benefit bolsters case for national basic income

The Canada Child Benefit has not only lifted kids out of poverty, but it has boosted the country’s economy by $139 billion since 2016, according to a new economic analysis of the initiative… Every dollar Ottawa spends in child benefits generates almost $2 in economic activity, says the report by the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis

Cancelling the Transition Child Benefit in Ontario is bad policy

… the TCB has provided support for children who are among the most vulnerable in our society at a time when their families are most in need… it goes to about ten per cent of children receiving social assistance, at less than one per cent of total social assistance program costs… elimination of the TCB will undeniably have downstream impacts not only on social assistance, but on other services, like housing, education, and health care.

Critics call it ‘shortsighted’ and ‘wrong’, but Ontario government moving forward with municipal funding cuts

Ford said some of this year’s planned cuts — to public health, child care and land ambulance funding — will take effect Jan. 1… The new plan will see all municipalities — including Toronto — pay 30 per cent of public health care costs… municipalities will also have to pay 20 per cent of the cost of creating new child-care spaces, which the province previously fully funded.

Ontario government apologizes for autism program changes; needs-based model won’t launch until next April

Todd Smith, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, acknowledged for the first time on Monday that changes to the autism program announced earlier this year were poorly conceived. “It’s clear to me that we didn’t get the redesign right the first time. I’m here to tell you we will now”… He added: “We are certainly sorry for the anxiety this has caused parents across Ontario.”

Ontario government slashes funding to children’s aid societies

The Ford government is reducing funding for children and youth at risk by $84.5 million, according to an analysis of provincial spending estimates by the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies… The cut comes as 18 child protection agencies struggle with deficits totalling more than $12 million. The deficits have already forced some agencies to lay off staff and reduce the number of children at risk they take into care.

Doug Ford’s government is a axe-wielding agent of chaos

If you were serious about preserving or enhancing services while also making administration more effective and cost-efficient, what you might do is sit down with the people doing the work and figure out a plan with them to do things more effectively. And if you succeeded, you’d see better services materialize and costs lowered, and you could announce the proven savings in your next budget… This doesn’t appear to be a government making tough but worthwhile changes. It appears to be a government gleefully wielding a wrecking ball…

Ford’s plan to eliminate teaching jobs gets a failing grade in new poll

Even though the question echoed Ford’s insistence that no current teachers will lose their jobs, 62 per cent still opposed the change, with 23 per cent in favour and 15 per cent neither supporting or opposing or unsure… Similarly, those polled were not enthusiastic about the government’s plan to have high school students take four online classes over four years, with 57 per cent opposed…
