Abortion pill’s sexist regulations deny women true reproductive choice
Doctor-dispensed drugs are a rarity. This condition is usually imposed to ensure that a drug is taken and not trafficked… There is no evidence women who want to terminate a pregnancy would try to sell Mifegymiso on the streets. There is no reason it can’t be dispensed by pharmacists… [or] prescribed by nurse-practitioners or midwives, as it is in many countries… Safety is important, but so is access.

Crackdown on Canada’s tax dodgers should include naming and shaming
The plans include a wholesale CRA crackdown on tax evasion on the Isle of Man, to be followed by more such crackdowns on tax havens. The CRA is also hiring more auditors and lawyers to focus on “high-risk” taxpayers and multinational corporations who use tax havens. The agency expects to recover more than $900 million from these sources alone. Beyond that, the CRA is setting up a special, independent committee to advise on offshore tax evasion and aggressive tax planning.

Liberal budget goes a long way to closing native education funding gap
… almost one-third of the funding is geared to “transformation” — creating the native school boards that regulate curriculum and professional development standards… The government is also providing money to roll out Martin’s Aboriginal Education Initiative. His model pilot project in two schools had impressive results, improving literacy to provincial averages by Grade 3, using techniques pioneered in Ontario problem schools.

Liberals to reassess First Nations education funds after removal from last year’s ledgers
… the First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act (Bill C-33), was panned by chiefs, who said there had been inadequate consultation and that Ottawa was putting the real control in the hands of the aboriginal affairs minister. Some of the $2-billion promised by the Conservatives was spent. But the impasse left $1.25-billion on the table. That unspent money was then erased in the 2015-16 budget…

UN Tells Canada to Clean Up Its Act on Inequality, Social Rights
The 11-page document lists some positive developments, but overall lambastes Canada for its treatment of temporary foreign workers as well as women’s rights. It notes that Canadian women are still over-represented in part-time and low-paid work, and repeatedly cites failures regarding Indigenous people and African Canadians and the social disparities they face… Canada does not have a justice system that allows its citizen to fight for social rights.

It takes more than money to close an education gap
It is argued that… better education for the youth on reserves, even isolated ones, will improve conditions if not solve problems. This assertion assumes that if young people did receive a solid education, they would remain on the reserves, a dubious proposition… The fact of being educated on reserves with so few opportunities, small populations and isolated geographies produces the disparities. We are kidding ourselves if we think otherwise.

Canada discriminates against children on reserves, tribunal rules
The federal government discriminates against First Nation children on reserves… the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has ruled. the federal government’s funding model and management of its First Nations child and family services “resulted in denials of services and created various adverse impacts for many First Nations children and families living on reserves.” The decision says the government must “cease the discriminatory practice and take measures to redress and prevent it.”

Whacking the top one per cent with a tax hike not the bonanza Liberals hype
The notion that what fairness demanded most of all was a tax cut for the middle class — as opposed to a tax cut for the lowest class — was always a bit of a stretch. Had the Liberals cut the 15 per cent bottom rate, of course, they could have done both, since the cut would benefit not only those in the bottom bracket but also those above it. But since the point of the exercise was to bribe the middle, they were not about to waste precious dollars on the poor.

Providing safe drinking water on reserves is simple. Just do it
Drinking water on reserves is a federal jurisdiction. Ottawa provides 80 per cent of the funding… in July there were 133 Health Canada drinking water advisories in 126 First Nations communities… One-quarter have been ongoing for more than 10 years. [Some] have been boiling water since the 1990s… Every Canadian needs clean drinking water. It’s not a complicated position, morally or technically. The money is there and the problems are fixable. No more excuses.

Could an NDP government grow Canadian productivity?
… which face of the labour movement will emerge after the election? Will it be the side that recognizes that flexible labour markets are a precondition for rising productivity, and that the best way of dealing with inequality is through generous social programs that help those at the bottom of the income scale and the unemployed? Or will it be the unyielding defenders of the “insiders” (those who already have jobs), who view unions as tools to get more for their members, regardless of the consequences?
