Clean clothes, decent food: Ontario’s inmates deserve this much

… decent water to drink; food that’s not expired or mouldy; clean clothing delivered on time and not covered in feces, urine and blood stains; books from outside; adequate time for phone calls so inmates aren’t left to fight among themselves for the chance to talk to family, friends and lawyers; some video visits; access to rehabilitation programs and exercise. Those are pretty basic standards that any jail in Ontario should be able, and expected, to deliver.

Stephen Lecce’s letter to parents doubles down on the Ford government’s half-baked child care plan

… if Premier Ford and Minister Lecce are scratching their heads and wondering why so many child care centres are refusing to open their doors until this hot mess is fixed, perhaps they should put their listening ears on. Instead of doubling down on the current child care reopening plan, it is time to think hard about how we could create a better child care system for Ontario.

Ontario expands emergency child care to include families of grocery-store workers, truck drivers

“While our front-line workers are looking after us, we need to make sure we’re looking after them and their families,” Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday… The workers now to be covered also include those employed in meat packing and other food supply businesses, members of the armed forces, truck drivers, cooks and cleaning staff in health-care facilities and nursing homes, and on-site staff in Ontario’s courts.

it is painfully obvious that we, as citizens, failed to speak up for Canada’s seniors at budget time, election -time, indeed most of the time. But in midcrisis, the imperative is to fix what we can and to vow not to let the long-term sector fall off the radar screen again, when this pandemic has passed.

Ontario must stop the spread of COVID-19 in long-term-care homes

Personal support workers, who provide the bulk of the daily care in long-term-care homes, are badly underpaid and overworked on normal days, let alone in the midst of a pandemic. And the way the system has been allowed to operate means these workers are often held to part-time hours, forcing them to cobble together jobs at multiple homes just to make a living. Ontario cannot afford to let this go on any longer.

Ontario bans fees for daycares closed during COVID-19 shutdown

The province is now “temporarily preventing child-care centres from collecting payments from parents, while also ensuring that their child-care spaces are protected… We need to support our parents who may be facing reduced income or layoffs during the COVID-19 outbreak.” The province said the order “immediately prevents any child-care operator from charging parent fees where care is not being provided,” exempting those that recently opened to provide care for the kids of front-line workers.

Province opening 50,000 free, 24-hour, child care spaces for essential workers

Ontario is partnering with municipalities and First Nations to open as many as 50,000 child care spaces for essential workers across the province in centres that will be free and available 24-7… All licensed child care centres in the province were ordered closed last Tuesday to help slow the spread of COVID-19… Free, 24-7 child care for children up to age 12 is unprecedented

Tories to inject $2 million in new funding for rape crisis centres — one day after signalling $1 million had been cut

In an apparent communications snafu from Ford’s Tories, the centres are in fact getting a cash infusion from Queen’s Park… The confusion apparently stems from the fact that the government is planning a new strategy to curb human trafficking expected to be announced Friday… Still, last year’s one-time $1-million funding announcement by the Tories was far less than the $14 million over three years the centres had been promised by the previous Liberal government.

Ford government axes $1M funding boost for rape crisis centres

The province has axed an additional $1 million in funding for the province’s 42 rape crisis centres, which are now warning that supports for survivors will have to be cut while wait lists for services will grow… Centres across the province will now have to let staff go, and end drop-in or after-hour programs for survivors… News of the funding cancellation came hours after the province’s financial watchdog reported that the government had underspent by $2 billion in the first three quarters of this fiscal year.

A shocking report details how Ontario’s most vulnerable youths are shuttled from child protection to the justice system

The researchers developed protocols and best practices for key players in the child protection and justice system, all designed to break the child-welfare-to-prison pipeline… [including] more reasonable bail conditions, trauma-informed training for group home caregivers, “anti-oppressive” practices, the use of restorative justice, and encouraging police to simply caution youths in care when called for an incident or send them to “diversion” programs… rather than lay charges
