CMA calls for elimination of sick note requirements by employers

The association says sick notes burden physicians with unnecessary administrative tasks and detract from patient care. In a new position paper, the CMA calls for legislative changes to restrict the requirement for sick notes and promote alternatives such as self-certification and flexible leave policies… the move aims to ease the administrative burden on health care providers and improve patients’ access to care and the overall efficiency of the health care system.

Many more dentists on board to provide care under dental-care program: Holland

… the increase is probably thanks to a change last month that allowed providers to participate on a claim-by-claim basis rather than registering in advance… If the program is to succeed, the government doesn’t just need all current dental-care providers to be ready to sign up. More professionals will also be needed to serve the nine million or so patients Ottawa expects will be eligible for the program before the end of next year.

Ontario considering expanding pharmacists’ powers to treat more common ailments

… the province is consulting with the industry on treating 14 more common ailments, such as a sore throat, shingles, and some sleep disorders… the government is also looking at allowing pharmacists to order and perform tests for strep throat and to administer additional vaccines for tetanus, diphtheria, pneumococcal, and shingles… [and] giving pharmacy technicians the power to administer vaccines for hepatitis, rabies, and meningitis.

Supreme Court of Canada won’t hear appeal involving private health care

Two Vancouver private health facilities and four patients argued that provisions of the Medicare Protection Act violate their constitutional rights due to long waits for care in B.C.’s publicly funded system… Justice John Steeves said in the original court ruling that while long waits for care might increase the risk to some patients, the provisions were justified by the overall objective of supporting a system where access to health care is based on need, not the ability to pay.

Canada to implement 988 suicide crisis line starting in fall 2023

starting at the end of November 2023, Canadians will be able to call 988 to be connected to a mental health crisis or suicide prevention service, free of charge. The Public Health Agency of Canada will decide which group will provide the service, along with the scope of care it will offer. The move will bring Canada in line with the United States, which launched its 988 service last month.

Liberals set to kick-start talks on new child-care system and funding, Hussen says

… a national system could take years to create, including building new infrastructure to accommodate the more than two million spaces that are estimated to be needed for widespread coverage… The Liberals have promised $420 million to train and retain early childhood educators, the specifics of which will be subject to negotiations with provinces… provincial needs would determine how many staff get retained through wage increases, or students trained through the help of bursaries… current agreements could be used as a platform for a national system

Ontario’s attorney general says COVID-19 has jumpstarted justice system modernization

Remote attendance at court, digital signatures where only hard copies had previously been mandatory, electronic issuance and sharing of court documents, as well as service by email without consent or court order are some of the innovations… broadcasting court proceedings on video streaming websites had increased participation in the justice system… the Superior Court reported that 50,000 hearings had been conducted virtually in a province where the technology was brand new.

Ottawa to seek equity or cash from companies applying for new COVID-19 loan program

Large companies that receive bridge financing through a new federal loan program will have to give the government the option to take an ownership stake, or provide a cash equivalent… “The idea behind the warrant is to make sure that if the firm does well that Canadians, and Canadian taxpayers, share in that upside” … companies can pay off the interest on the loan through in-kind contributions, usually goods or services, for the first two years of the loan.

Cabinet approves $240M Mohawk settlement for 132-year-old land claim

In 2015, the federal government offered a global settlement of just under $240 million in compensation and offered to give the community the right to have up to 18,282 acres of land added to the Akwesasne reserve, if the First Nation buys parcels on the open market. A referendum was held in December 2018… and 80 per cent of those who participated voted in favour… once they receive the money, the Mohawks of Akwesasne effectively renounce their claim to disputed land and confirm that the 1888 surrender was valid.
