Despite all the hype about his image makeover and how he’s a changed man… he continues to fuel the rage and hate that resides in many of his hard-line followers who despise Trudeau, the federal government and, in many cases, anything that they believe restricts their “freedom.” … his lack of policy specifics to date on key issues facing Canada is stunning.

What is Doug Ford hiding in his mandate letters to government ministers?

Ever since he became premier in 2018, Ford has refused to let the public see his mandate letters to his cabinet ministers. Indeed, Ford is so desperate to keep the letters secret that he’s waging a costly legal battle to prevent their release. It’s a fight he has lost all the way to Ontario’s top court and is now appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada… he’s also keeping the letters secret even from key bureaucrats who help analyze and formulate government policy.

Doug Ford’s troubling push for more private health care

… Health Minister Christine Elliott said the Ford government was “opening up pediatric surgeries, cancer screenings, making sure that we can let independent health facilities operate private hospitals…” … For supporters of public health care, the June 2 Ontario election may be the most important in a generation. Indeed, Ford’s drive to further privatize health care while continuing to underfund the public system and underpay health-care workers should be the top campaign issue.

Is it time for Ontario to end Catholic school funding?

… such a move would save taxpayers an estimated $1.6 billion a year… And school boards across Ontario are facing huge financial crunches, with dropping enrolment often resulting in half-empty schools… a single public system would also mean thousands of students could attend schools closer to home and put a permanent end to calls for public funding for schools operated by Jewish, Muslim and Christian fundamentalists groups.

Greed fuels fight for private health care

Justice John Steeves ruled that Day failed to show patients rights were being violated because of long wait times, noting the law was based on equitable access to care, not on a patient’s ability to pay… If the judge had ruled in Day’s favour, it would have been a nail in the coffin for public medicare… by opening the door for insurance companies and financial institutions to make a ton of money — the very people who will financially support Day and others fighting for private health care.

How Doug Ford failed our long-term care system

… the numbers 9 and 34 are cited as how many long-term-care beds were created in Ontario during Doug Ford’s first 18 months as premier… 35 is the number of in-depth reports over the past 20 years recommending ways to improve Ontario’s beleaguered long-term care system… And the number 38,400 is how many Ontario residents are on waiting lists right now for a bed in a long-term care facility… there can be “no excuse for a government not intervening actively, systematically, rigorously” to improve the sector.

The forgotten sector in the COVID-19 fight

Across Ontario, there are more than 100 Community Living organizations serving 12,000 people with intellectual disabilities… Unlike workers in hospitals and health clinics, though, Community Living staff are not considered health-care workers. That means they have to scramble for protective gloves, masks and extra help for their clients.

Six reasons to just say ‘No’ to electoral reform

As tempting as it might seem to some to “reform” our system, the reality is that Canadians in every province that has held a referendum on electoral reform have voted against the idea. To keep pushing this bad idea makes little sense, especially when the reasons for rejecting are so powerful… Firstly, … there is no evidence that other nations with such voting systems, such as Germany or Sweden, are any better governed than is Canada.

The neutering of Doug Ford

Ford has reversed his stand on sex-ed, on a French-language university, on cuts to social services, such as a child benefit that pays for essentials like diapers and food for children in vulnerable families, on cuts to children’s aid societies and more. Ford also caved in during the last-minute contract negotiations with the 55,000 school support staffers, who had threatened to strike this week.
