De-streaming proposal lacks understanding of how courses delivered

… the current streaming system is set up to allow students to take a diverse set of courses. Students are not streamed into an all-applied, or an all-academic, program; rather, each course is selected at the level deemed best… Flexibility is the key, rather than the one-size-fits-all approach of de-streaming.

Provinces pose challenge to Indigenous child-welfare reform: Bellegarde

… Bill C-92… recognizes the inherent right Indigenous communities have to oversee child-welfare services… one of the biggest challenges is getting the premiers and the territorial governments to accept that there is a jurisdiction that needs to be respected… Ottawa provides the funding for child protection services on reserves but those services are governed by provincial laws and in most cases, provided by provincial agencies.

Their lives have been defined by trauma. Why kick kids out of foster care and group homes when they turn 18?

Until COVID-19, it was the rule — now suspended until Dec. 31 — that youth in care must move out of their foster or group home when they hit 18 and live independently, whether they are ready or not… “Too many young people ‘age out’ to poverty, to homelessness. It’s a pipeline to the criminal justice system for some. And it exacerbates mental health conditions,” says Ratnam, co-founder of the non-profit Ontario Children’s Advancement Coalition (OCAC).

Ontario to end streaming in Grade 9 and change other ‘racist, discriminatory’ practices

The Ontario government plans to end streaming in Grade 9 — a long-standing practice that research has found disproportionately impacts Black and low-income students and severely limits their chance of graduating and going on to post-secondary education… The province will also introduce a ban on suspending younger, elementary-school kids — Black students are again disproportionately affected — and improve diversity in hiring and promotions.

Former foster child first to lead local Children’s Aid in 126-year history

Typically, after care, foster kids experience: low academic achievement, poverty, homelessness, criminal justice system involvement, early parenthood, poor physical and mental health, and loneliness… there is no tracking of life outcomes after care… The sector needs our leadership — 40 years of academic research on youth outcomes and a century of troubling history prove it.

Thoughts on forestalling the coming childcare crisis

… the childcare sector requires an immediate injection of capital and a rapid expansion of space(s) in this critical phase of re-opening the economy… the Multilateral Early Learning and Childcare Framework… should immediately be boosted to pay some or all of the costs of a temporary injection of much-needed capital… provinces should actively support childcare providers to make use of community spaces that can accommodate satellite locations for childcare

Why has all of Canada not stood up with us? Canada’s unique brand of racism can be quiet and loud. It manifests as indifference and it has crept into all public institutions, government agencies, corporations and in the way you look away from the homeless Indigenous man you see sitting on the sidewalk… The will of the majority must stand up and commit to equity, to giving all of our children that same, fresh start.

Let’s admit it – online education is a pale shadow of the real thing

… the massive and sudden shift in teaching at all levels exposes social and economic faultlines that pre-date the current pandemic… Even at places where in-person teaching will resume in the fall, the social and cultural aspects of campus life will be almost entirely absent… Given physical distancing, the in-person option will presumably be available only for small classes… online education is what we are forced to accept… that we’ve been forced willy-nilly into this viral-virtual corner is no solace, or solution.

Don’t grandfather machine guns, eliminate them

Trudeau’s subsequent reference to “grandfathering” rules after a post-ban two-year transition period is alarming… A ban means no guns; it doesn’t mean keep the ones you have. It shouldn’t mean large payouts to gun owners…
