Ontario legislation will grant equal rights to same-sex parents
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says provincial laws defining parents as a man and a woman are outdated and announced Tuesday her government will bring in new legislation in September giving same-sex parents the same rights as heterosexual parents… to “ensure that parents are clearly recognized in Ontario, whether they be gay, straight, and whether their children are conceived with or without assistance,”

Universal child care the perfect Mother’s Day gift
With regulated child care spaces for less than a quarter of children and the highest fees in the country, it is the policy solution that could make a difference for Ontario’s moms… And it’s the gift that keeps on giving: benefiting children, communities and the economy… For both mothers and the child care workforce, a child care system is key to closing the wage gap… A belated gift – even one that’s 40 years overdue – is far better than another year of inaction.

Abortion pill’s sexist regulations deny women true reproductive choice
Doctor-dispensed drugs are a rarity. This condition is usually imposed to ensure that a drug is taken and not trafficked… There is no evidence women who want to terminate a pregnancy would try to sell Mifegymiso on the streets. There is no reason it can’t be dispensed by pharmacists… [or] prescribed by nurse-practitioners or midwives, as it is in many countries… Safety is important, but so is access.

Canadian shelters forced to turn away majority of women and children in need
The report, entitled Shelter Voices, also reveals the frequency with which women and children cross provincial borders to flee violence… 44 per cent, of shelters had received women from other provinces or territories in the past month alone… rates of violence against women have not diminished over time, and that gender-based violence remains “pervasive” in Canada… aboriginal women and those in the North are particularly affected.

Close the wage gap between men and women
… women in Ontario still make only 70.6 cents for every dollar a man earns, for a gap of 29.4 per cent… no matter what women have done over the years to close the gap — whether it’s climbing the corporate ladder, getting more education, earning more experience or changing occupations — it has barely budged, according to a new study from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Ontario backs off proposed new child care regulations
The minister has said the proposed changes were necessary to accommodate 12-month maternity leaves and full-day kindergarten, which weren’t in place when the current age groupings, group sizes and staff-child ratios were implemented. But parents, daycare workers and academics were alarmed by provincial plans that would have seen 12-month-old babies cared for in toddler rooms and 2-year-olds moved into pre-school rooms with children as old as 5.

Time to drop the distinct crime of sexual assault
… it is time to abandon the separate heading of sexual assault. The morally repugnant act is assault, not sex. It is intolerable for one human being to use physical force against another for any purpose. All separate headings for assault cheapen this fact. While a sexual component seriously aggravates an assault, that’s a matter for higher sentencing, not a prerequisite for a finding of guilt. The criminal courts of 30 years ago may well have needed a title for a particular genre of assault to make them understand it as an assault, but 30 years ago there were precious few female judges or Crowns.

Who’s a feminist? It’s complicated …
The general principles of feminism are now embraced by all. Nobody is against gender equality… Nobody is proposing unequal pay for equal work. Nobody thinks violence against women is a good thing… These days, it’s not enough simply to believe in equal rights for women. To call yourself a feminist, you must acknowledge the intricate hierarchy of oppression, in which gender is only one factor that shapes women’s lives. There’s also race, sexual orientation, class, ethnicity, ableism and so on.

Ontario daycare reforms will mess up social goals
… fewer infants may receive care in local daycares. Infants would graduate to the “toddler room,”… at a year old… “toddler rooms” would have to get bigger to meet the demand… because the new regulations provide less incentive to create space for infants, many care facilities are contemplating ending daycare services for children less than 12 months… So what does this have to do with Canada’s poverty reduction strategy?
