Getting Connected: Digital Health and Information Sharing under Bill 74

After the first year of implementation, Ontario Health Team Candidates are expected to meet the following criteria: have a harmonized information management plan in place; increase adoption of relevant digital health tools; and
have plans in place to streamline and integrate point of service systems and use data to support patient care and population health management… The backbone of integration will be the ability to share information.

Canadian study identifies five most vulnerable groups for FASD

The study identified five high-prevalence groups: children in care; people in correctional service custody; people in special education services; people using specialized services for developmental disabilities or psychiatric care; and Indigenous populations. The study was designed to help improve prevalence estimates and predictions with an eye to better public policy, and to allow for better planning and budgeting of health care, community and social services response.

‘A Broken System’: Adoptive Families Say Child Welfare Agencies Are Failing On Fasd

In Canada, child welfare is a provincial responsibility and there is no national data on FASD among kids in care. But research published in 2014 on Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario found a prevalence rate three to four times higher than estimates for children in the general population. Broader research on child welfare systems across North America suggest the prevalence of FASD could be as high as 17 per cent… Respite options also tend to be crisis-oriented.

The view from the ER: Ford is chopping up the safety net

On any given day, a small number of the patients seen in our ED are high-frequency users, many of whom have complex social concerns… Addressing… the problems of so many of my patients, requires real commitment from governments to support the social determinants of health – the social, economic and environmental factors that determine individual and population health. Instead, the government has promised cuts to public health, education, legal aid and social services.

Ontario’s health system needs change. But has Ford got it right?

In the next layer, you will find 10 public-health organizations, down from 35, and 10 ambulance organizations, down from 59. One might have thought that these 10 new service areas might have been married up with 10 health regions, but alas, no… it’s still a simpler structure than what it replaced. What’s not yet known is how the Ford health-care regime will work in real life and how it will get local health professionals to work together.

The self-assessment form requires each applicant… to demonstrate: a history of formally working with other providers or organizations to advance integrated care; a plan for physician and clinical engagement, including physician and clinical leadership as part of the team’s leadership and governance structure; a commitment to the vision and goals of the Ontario Health Team model; a commitment to a central brand; and a commitment to working together towards a single clinical and fiscal accountability framework.

Psychiatrists shouldn’t have a monopoly over psychotherapy

An average of 57 sessions of CBT over the course of approximately one year delivered the exact same clinical outcome as 234 sessions of psychoanalytic psychotherapy delivered over four years. The implications of this study are huge… Although psychiatrists do have some special advantages when they integrate psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy treatment together, they do not have a monopoly on delivering effective psychotherapy.
