An Unparalleled and Urgent Task Faces Premiers Next Week

At the top of the list is helping the 6.5 million people without access to primary care… Equally urgent is the need to beef up home and community care to make it possible for our rapidly aging population to age both well and where they want to, whether in their own homes or in a community setting. These actions on primary and senior care would ease the pressure on beleaguered hospitals and their emergency rooms.

The Ontario treaty deal is a game-changer for Indigenous rights

The $10-billion settlement announced this week between the Robinson-Huron First Nations, Ontario and the federal government signals a tectonic shift in Indigenous-government relations… Major developments of the Ring of Fire mineral properties and other northern Ontario projects are slowed by the absence of agreements with First Nations. A new prosperity-sharing formula will be critical in breaking future logjams.

A significant milestone in lifting people with disabilities out of poverty

This is a significant milestone, potentially the most important addition to Canada’s social safety net since the Guaranteed Income Supplement for low-income seniors was introduced in 1967… The CDB is desperately needed. About one in five Canadians live with a physical, developmental or psychiatric disability… The new benefit should, in theory, lift more than 1.4 million Canadians living with disabilities out of poverty.

Where are the Early Childhood Educators?

Instead of creating more spaces that may end up unfilled, provincial governments need to prioritize funding on ECE attraction and retention. They need to raise wages, encourage career pathways for ECEs, and fast-track foreign credential recognition. They also need to improve working conditions and offer comprehensive work benefits.

Justin Trudeau is leaving his stamp on the Supreme Court of Canada

The National Housing Strategy won’t end homelessness without supportive housing

We found that having both affordable housing and staff on-site who could meet a variety of needs proved transformational for the tenants… To address chronic homelessness, the federal government needs to include funding for longer-term supportive housing in its National Housing Strategy. And provincial governments must increase social assistance rates to provide more income towards housing.

The Ford government is bad at budgeting — or it isn’t being straight with Ontarians

… it misled everyone and projected a deficit and smaller future surpluses so it could starve programs, limit new spending, and divert that future money elsewhere to big tax cuts, corporate giveaways (hello, Stellantis), pre-election voter inducements, or paying down the debt… it boils down to this: the government is either incompetent or dishonest. We don’t have enough information to draw a firm conclusion either way.

As the U.S. expands work conditions for income assistance, Canada takes a different tack

The distinction between the U.S. and Canada’s approaches don’t extend beyond federal income assistance. Work conditions and other bureaucratic measures still dominate at the state and provincial level, despite significant federal funding support… [However] there is some movement to reduce barriers to welfare participation in Canada… Prince Edward Island legislature has affirmed their support for a basic income to replace current welfare assistance in the province.

Ontario’s doctors report progress on health-care recommendations but more needs to be done

The OMA has identified three key areas where we must focus our immediate attention: ensuring that everyone has access to team-based primary care… reducing physician burnout and the administrative burden contributing to it… (and) addressing the lack of access to co-ordinated community-based care… The OMA remains committed to ongoing collaboration with elected officials to drive positive change in our health-care system.

It’s time to abolish the Catholic school system in Ontario

The demographic and political imperatives that required a separate system no longer exist. The system continues to exist because of a powerful lobby, entrenched interests, and inertia… it would take only Ontario and the federal government to do so. The legal path to ending public denominational funding is much easier than you think. There would be court challenges and protests, but the separate-system backers would lose.
