Landmark Dental Benefit Act passes House of Commons final vote – so, what’s next?

Bill C-31… the Dental Benefit Act is an interim step toward the much fuller and more comprehensive public dental program… the new public dental program will be a federal program without cooperation from the provinces and territories. The NDP agrees with the Liberals’ go-it-alone approach to avoid the new program becoming embroiled in federal-provincial wrangling over health care dollars…

Insiders say Justin Trudeau ready to freeze out Quebec and other provinces in federal health-care deals

… if Ottawa needs to sign deals with only some provinces and leave others… it’s a move the federal government is prepared to make… Government sources suggest there will be money — but with “light” conditions. Ottawa won’t allow federal cash to offset provincial money, they say. If the provinces choose to reduce their level of health-care funding, the federal government wants to reduce its transfers by the same amount.

Tackling the opioid crisis

… statistics point us to two solutions: First, we need to regulate, rather than criminalize, all psychoactive drugs, and second, we ought to provide a safe supply of drugs to users. Those two solutions were, respectively, the “core” and “urgent” priorities identified by an expert task force last year, but so far, Ottawa has done relatively little toward making them a reality.

Ontario’s health-care system isn’t candy store to be plundered

With our health-care system reeling, Ford is charging ahead with further privatization — Ontario health care is already 40 per cent private — and selling this as a way to save the system through “innovation.” … The system’s problems have been thoroughly studied by countless commissions and the solutions do not involve privatization… Ontario has lots of unused hospital operating rooms, idled after years of cutbacks.

Reforming our approach to drugs

… while study after study confirms that criminalization has no effect on drug usage rates, it has created a vast transnational network of organized crime… the federal government’s expert task force last year recommended an end to our century-long experiment with prohibition. As its “core priority,” the force recommended Canada “immediately develop and implement a single public health framework with specific regulations for all psychoactive substances, including currently illegal drugs as well as alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis.”

Ontario should ditch any plans to further privatize health care. It just doesn’t work — and usually makes matters worse

First, the government should ditch any plans to further privatize the system… That’s because it benefits not those who need health care, but those who can pay the handsome user fees required by what in effect is two-tier health care. Second, the government would be wise to view this crisis as an opportunity — a chance to rationalize and expand a public system that by and large does work.

Are thousands of uninsured people about to lose health coverage in Ontario? Fears grow about end to COVID-era OHIP rules

Health Coalition Chairperson to seek accountability for health dollars at premiers’ meeting

The Canadian Health Coalition is in favour of increased federal funding to provinces, but not without strings attached to ensure the funding is used for health care in an accountable manner and supports our public health care system… Budget 2022 stated the federal government wants to ensure that any additional federal funding will improve Canada’s health care system.

B.C. and Ottawa are showing leadership in fighting the scourge of drug overdoses

The exemption, which is authorized by the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, will decriminalize possession of small amounts of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy. Toronto has applied for a similar exemption, and the feds ought to approve it now… there’s abundant evidence that drug prohibition has little effect on how many people use drugs but plays a significant role in making an already risky activity even riskier.

Feds rightly cautious about provincial demands for unconditional health funding
