Contrary to popular belief, lawyers are capable of acting like adults. We can handle booking court appearances without judicial supervision and are not averse to change. Hopefully not contrary to popular belief, lawyers want what is best for their clients and the public, and what is best for both is an efficient 21st-century court system.

Harper’s government has cut funding to women’s organizations, withdrawn Canadian support for family planning in developing nations and permitted Conservative MPs to introduce bills aimed at preventing sex selection of babies by restricting abortion… Despite the hoopla about men failing and women triumphing, equality still eludes the female half of Canadians who mostly remain segregated in the lowest paying jobs and carry the burden of child-rearing.

three principles will dominate the AFN’s approach to the bill: 1. First Nations are entitled to adequate and predictable funding that meets the needs of every native on reserve. 2. Any legislation that affects first nations education on reserve must have the consent of the chiefs before it can be introduced into Parliament, much less passed by it. 3. The preservation of native culture, especially native languages, must be at the heart of any native curriculum.

Rather than work with First Nations groups, it [the Harper government] is in confrontation mode. It fiddles with the math and blames the victim. Duncan also left the veiled threat that legislation would be forthcoming, without making it clear what that would be or how it would affect our treaties and aboriginal rights. Despite all the smoke and mirrors, education remains seriously underfunded in First Nations communities.

… crime rates are the lowest in decades… with youth crime falling faster than overall crime. And yet, less crime has not translated into lower court costs. Crime is down 33 per cent in the past six years, but criminal justice costs are up 35 per cent in the same period.

We cannot say we want schools to be equitable for some but not others. Public schools are exactly that — public schools. They must be equitable and represent the diversity that exists in our society. Equity must be equally applied to all stakeholders, for all of our neighbours and fellow citizens… No community should expect to impose a burden on public schools that, as a system, we cannot and should not bear.

Canada remains remarkably generous towards its well-paid senior executives, public and private. They may make costly mistakes with taxpayers’ money, squander the life savings of their investors, but they still walk away with huge bonuses… Leaving aside instances of fraud, or incompetence, there is an underlying problem with executive compensation in Canada: salaries, bonuses, and severance packages are increasingly unrelated to performance, to economic reality, to the pressures faced by ordinary Canadians.

The chief justice of Canada’s Supreme Court says the legal system risks a loss of public faith unless barriers to public access to the courts, especially for civil matters, are lowered… “Being able to access justice is fundamental to the rule of law. If people decide they can’t get justice, they will have less respect for the law”… the issue is especially relevant to civil courts, where there are not enough judges, lawyers are expensive… and there are delays.

… patience with discussions about poverty, housing, resource-sharing and education is wearing thin among first nations… the federal government is fighting in court to quash demands from first-norganizations to fund aboriginal child welfare at the same level as provincial governments. On education, demands that first-nations schooling be funded at the same level as provincial schools have been met with process – a task force… and promises for legislation down the road.
