Childcare Reform Key to Post-Covid Economic Recovery

“We need immediate attention and incremental but aggressive reforms to get this right, for women, for families and for Canada as we emerge from the pandemic.” … the authors recommend… a more generous, progressive and more frequently paid refundable tax credit… increasing operating and/or capital grants for licensed providers… new federal dollars for childcare be consolidated into a single, dedicated and permanent transfer to provinces.

Ontario must spend more to drive prosperity and growth

Growth has to be inclusive, meaning recognizing that women, new Canadians and others will get the support they need to participate fully in the economy… The Ford government would be wise to demonstrate full support for a universal child care model that marries social and economic goals, and further increases women’s participation in the labour force. Distance education and telemedicine will also be vital…

Blessed with historically low interest rates, which show little sign of rising, and one of the healthiest debt-to-GDP ratios in the developed world, Canada cannot only service its pandemic bill, but thrive on the other side, many experts say… there’s little doubt that the country’s economy will bounce back to some extent in post-pandemic times and that the increased revenues produced by that rebound will help lessen the debt’s impact.

The glaring gap in the COVID-19 response

If workplaces are deemed to be essential businesses, then we need to ensure workers are properly protected… for many workers, COVID-19 has created an impossible dilemma. These people need to be supported, because they get up every day to produce the products and services we need to live and work through this pandemic. Paid sick days are long-overdue, urgent, and required to protect our community. Paid sick leave will help save lives.

Ottawa urged to ban CEO bonuses if company received wage subsidy

[The CCPA] believes that Canada should follow other developed countries like Spain and the Netherlands that explicitly prohibit bonuses and dividends if they receive wage subsidies. It also wants to exclude companies from substantially increasing executive salaries to prevent them from bypassing restrictions on bonuses… The CCPA also thinks Ottawa should introduce a top marginal tax bracket to help pay for the large deficit caused by its response to COVID-19.

New Year, Same Work Anxiety.  How capitalism makes work-life ‘balance’ feel impossible

Keeping us anxiously tethered to work ensures we’ll keep working, because, for a lot of people, is there really another option? We need a solid safety net… one that ensures that losing income or employment doesn’t have cascading effects on housing security or health security. The pandemic isn’t disappearing in 2021, and neither is the need to reconsider work policies and structures that don’t so tightly tie our time, worth and lives to our jobs. This is a problem that won’t be fixed by reminders to “make time for you.”

The telecom giants are not adequately serving ‘all Canadians’

If there is a “digital divide” (and there surely is), this has been brought about and sustained by the telecom companies themselves… The privilege that they have been accorded to date in providing these highly lucrative services must come with greater responsibility to ensure all Canadians obtain reliable and sufficient Wi-Fi access.

CRA names companies that received federal emergency wage subsidy

… more than 368,000 businesses, non-profits and charities in Canada have received the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS)… A recent review of CEWS disclosures by the Financial Post found that at least 68 publicly traded Canadian companies continued to pay out shareholder dividends while receiving the wage subsidy. The review found those companies got at least $1-billion in CEWS and paid out more than $5-billion in dividends.

Ottawa will take a hard look at companies that paid dividends while accepting COVID-19 supports, Justin Trudeau says

The program was meant to help companies avoid layoffs and keep employees on the payroll… 30 companies that paid out a combined total of $2 billion to shareholders between April and September while receiving the wage subsidy… Extendicare, the largest operator of private nursing homes in Canada, had paid nearly $10.5 million in dividends since April, while its home-care subsidiary was receiving millions of dollars from the wage subsidy.
