Violence in Ontario jails must be stopped
Ontario ombudsman André Marin has exposed a series of violent acts against inmates by provincial correctional officers… cases that Marin says weren’t properly investigated or were simply covered up. Marin… wants rules and penalties to break the “code of silence” among guards. And the union wants the ministry to tackle the violence exacerbated by overcrowded and understaffed jails. Clearly, change is long overdue.

… the Nurse-Family Partnership…
Two Ontario ministries turned away a social program for at-risk mothers so grounded in evidence it went on to unite Democrats and Republicans south of the border… adopted in at least 42 American states… By targeting first-time mothers and appealing to their instinct to help their children, the program steered many away from a path of abuse, drug-use, unemployment and crime — changes that saved so much money it appealed to conservatives too.

Ontario government should OK bill for dementia strategy
Bill 54 seeks to establish an Alzheimer’s advisory council to help the government create better strategies for care using the latest dementia research. In particular, more work is needed to ensure nursing homes don’t use anti-psychotics — which can harm the elderly — as chemical restraints… As Delia Sinclair of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario says, “It’s absolutely imperative to give these individuals a voice and heed their words.”

Ontario should stop siphoning money from dental fund for poor
Apr 01 2013
With a cynical sleight of hand, the province of Ontario is stripping millions of dollars from a program designed to provide dental care for the working poor and pumping it into sports promotion programs… Teeth are not covered under the Canada Health Act so the costs of dental care are either paid out-of-pocket, covered by employer health insurance or provided to those on social assistance. For low-income families with no coverage, the cost is prohibitive.

Small claims not quick or cheap
Dec. 31, 2012
… it takes on average 6.7 months for a case to reach a final order or disposition. You should expect to spend at least a few hundred dollars and if you place a value on your time it can be upwards of a couple thousand dollars. If you sue in small claims court you will likely have to spend about 25 hours of your personal time on the case including attending the courthouse in-person twice or three times during business hours. That’s a lot of time off work.

Not enough being done in Ontario for those waiting for nursing homes
Dec. 14, 2012
… as Ontario’s auditor general pointed out this week in a low-key but shocking report, for old people themselves far too little is being done. In some areas, matters are getting worse… While the number of people on nursing home wait lists increased by 85 per cent between 2005 and 2012, the number of long-term beds went up by only 3 per cent. Why? In part, it’s because nursing home operators (private and public) are gaming the system.

Ontario needs to get on with the job of tackling autism
Dec. 03, 2012
The Liberals need a reminder that good governments care for their most vulnerable citizens — after the television cameras are turned off. They do so with actions, not empty words that leave parents of young children crushed by a bureaucratic mess blocking timely care… It’s time to stop dithering. Empty promises waste more than time; they squander lives.

TD Economics says child care should be a top spending priority for governments after deficits eliminated
November 26, 2012
The “widespread and long-lasting” economic, social and health benefits for children, families and society far outweigh the costs… For every dollar invested, the return ranges from roughly $1.50 to almost $3. For disadvantaged children, the return runs into the double digits… “At 25 per cent of GDP, Canada ranks last among comparable European and Anglo-speaking countries.”
