First Nations urged to implement their own education acts

The proposed federal act threatens the self-determination goal of Indian control of Indian education… “They’re going to say, ‘We passed legislation and if you don’t abide by us we’re going to withhold your funding.’ It’s disrespectful.” The federal government honours and respects francophone language and culture, providing around $18,000 per year per student, he noted. Meanwhile, it provides around $6,500 per student to on-reserve schools

Let’s work together for the environment and indigenous rights

From preliminary discussions and first principles to the finer points of legislative drafting, this working group continued to serve through several versions of the bill in multiple parliamentary sessions… Co-chairs representing the federal government and indigenous peoples created equality at the table… But the linchpin of this respectful engagement was the sharing of draft legislation with legal counsel for indigenous organizations prior to its tabling in the House of Commons.

National chief Shawn Atleo joins activists in call to action

Mr. Atleo… said he sees a growing awareness on the part of business leaders and the public at large that there needs to be a more equitable relationship between aboriginal people and the government, especially when it comes to the sharing of resource revenues. But so many other points of disconnect remain and “it doesn’t have to be this way,” Mr. Atleo said. “It’s not what our collective ancestors thought we’d be doing at this juncture in our history.”

Indigenous poverty: the cost of doing not enough

… poverty impairs educational attainment and health, and in turn, the capacity of poor indigenous children to become economically productive adults… child poverty generates social costs throughout the life cycle… particularly in health-care service… criminal justice, and child welfare… high levels of poverty and related economic inequality lead to social conflict as the aspirations of poor indigenous children who have grown into poor adults are thwarted.

Aboriginal people still unequal

A new report compiled by the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC)… shows Canada’s aboriginal people: have lower median after-tax income; are more likely to collect employment insurance and social assistance; are more likely to experience physical, emotional or sexual abuse; are more likely to be victims of violent crimes; and are more likely to be incarcerated and less likely to be granted parole.

Indigenous children face deplorable poverty

Ontario Court of Appeal message on native justice must force change

Studies and reports repeatedly cite the lack of aboriginals on juries when native people are on trial, even if their fate is supposed to be decided by a fair representation of society… a decision by the Ontario Court of Appeal may finally have the power to create a fairer judicial process for aboriginal people… the court’s split decision quashed a 2008 manslaughter conviction… It will be up to a second jury — which is supposed to include on-reserve aboriginals…

Aboriginal ‘workfare’ program getting positive response on reserves, despite vocal critics

… The government isn’t keen on calling it workfare… but that’s what it is. The unemployment rate in Saskatchewan is 4.4%. That compares to a dependency rate of nearly 50% on reserves… The new First Nations Job Fund, worth $109-million over five years, is aimed at offering personalized job training to native youths, whether it’s through upgrading education to Grade 12 levels, providing career planning, granting training allowances, or even giving wage subsidies to encourage employers to hire young natives.

Prosperous, self-reliant First Nations are in everyone’s interest

First Nations are disproportionately affected by economic, social and health issues that extend far beyond the simple answers of responsible fiscal management and federal transfer payments… Aboriginal communities benefiting from self-directed economic development see reduced mortality, infectious and chronic disease, fewer mental health issues and less substance abuse… They require lower levels of tax-funded support.

Ryerson allows aboriginal students to learn their own way

At a time when 95 per cent of aboriginal young people don’t go to university — and many of those who start fall away — the program Ryerson and FNTI have developed is worth heeding. It offers the youth of First Nations — the fastest-growing segment of Canada’s population — an opportunity to learn the skills they need without sacrificing their identity… There are no lecture halls, no passive listening and no jockeying for dominance. “We are all teachers and learners… We all bring our knowledge to the sharing circle.”
