How does Ontario respond to people in crisis — and how should it?

… a big part of this new model has to be better mental-health care in general, so fewer people end up getting to that crisis point in the first place. The current model produces tragic outcomes, yes, but it also doesn’t work for a lot of people who never have a tragic outcome, per se, but need help they don’t get. And this is especially true with racialized or otherwise marginalized communities.

Police shouldn’t be answering mental-health calls

At this point… there’s no excuse for politicians to refuse to act… there are models elsewhere that could usefully provide direction. One that’s receiving lots of attention… involves teams of medical professionals and crisis workers responding directly to calls involving people in mental crisis, and rarely has to resort to police backup.

Ontario to fully fund nursing homes despite lower occupancies

Restricting admissions to single- and double-occupancy rooms will exacerbate a chronic shortage of long-term care beds in Ontario… the government’s ban on new admissions to ward rooms will eliminate 4,303 beds, representing 5.5 per cent of the province’s total… those who no longer need acute care but have nowhere else to go, reached a historic high of 5,300 as of Monday.

For-profit nursing homes have four times as many COVID-19 deaths as city-run homes, Star analysis finds

A resident in a for-profit home has been about 60 per cent more likely to catch COVID-19 and 45 per cent more likely to die than a resident in a non-profit home. A for-profit resident has also been about four times more likely to catch COVID-19 and four times more likely to die than a resident in a municipally run home… Overall, for-profit homes make up less than 60 per cent of long-term-care homes in the province, but they account for 16 of the 20 worst outbreaks.

Virtual care is booming amid COVID-19

… digital healthcare had been on the rise for a while. Infoway’s 2019 survey showed that “50 per cent of Canadians now report they can access at least one digital health service online, such as viewing their health information, making an appointment, or consulting with a health care provider.”“The way we’ve been practicing medicine for the last 100 years is changing,” says Tytus. “The days of brick and mortar physical medicine are going to be less and less important.”

Ontario sets up locations for COVID-19 assessment centres and postpones public health cuts

This move “recognizes the considerable time and resources necessary for public health units to effectively respond to COVID-19”… Parts of Ontariot serviced by the assessment centres will be served by hospital emergency wards. The province is also boosting resources for Telehealth Ontario, which has seen high call volumes and long waits as people call in with questions about the new coronavirus.
