What Bermuda’s 50-year-old gun ban can teach Canada

Unlike Bermuda… Canada seems unwilling to acknowledge its failings and pursue anything but a gun-violence strategy centred on police action and blunt restrictions. “Don’t focus on the gun,” Mr. Caines offers up as advice. “Focus on society’s challenge … and put mitigating factors and life-changing factors that allow our young men to get connected to society.”

Ford government’s child-care tax credit not much help to low-income families, watchdog says

… two-thirds of the estimated $460 million annual cost of the tax credit will go to families who make more than $63,700 a year. That is because low-income families pay very little income tax and are unlikely to spend their limited income on child care… Ontario’s tax credit would need to triple to bring women’s labour force participation up to the level of Quebec… where 86.7 per cent of women with young children are working

Ontario’s top judges slam Ford government over cuts to legal aid

Ontario’s most senior judges delivered a rare public rebuke Tuesday of the Ford government’s cuts to legal aid funding… Critics had already said that for years the legal aid system has been underfunded, resulting in individuals being turned down for assistance as they made too much money to qualify, yet also did not make enough to hire their own lawyer.

Long-term care cuts harming seniors

Cancelling the Transition Child Benefit in Ontario is bad policy

… the TCB has provided support for children who are among the most vulnerable in our society at a time when their families are most in need… it goes to about ten per cent of children receiving social assistance, at less than one per cent of total social assistance program costs… elimination of the TCB will undeniably have downstream impacts not only on social assistance, but on other services, like housing, education, and health care.

Family law cuts affect more than the poor

… many middle-class Ontarians who used to qualify for free legal help are now faced with the intimidating challenge of appearing in court without advice or paying hefty private legal fees… When people come to court unprepared, it also places an additional burden on court resources… Wasted court time is also a waste of public funds… Ford’s Legal Aid cuts hurt everyone, regardless of income. To view it otherwise is simply wrong.

Doug Ford announces that cuts to municipal public health and childcare programs will go ahead

Under his revised plan, local municipalities will be forced to cover 30 per cent of all their public-health costs, starting next year. The province currently covers 100 per cent of the cost of certain public-health programs, and 75 per cent of others… the Premier is going ahead with a move to renege on the previous Liberal government’s pledge to fund 100 per cent of the costs of new daycare spots, instead offering municipalities 80 per cent.
