Canada’s new dental care plan will be tangible and popular: MP Don Davies

While Conservative politicians like Pierre Poilievre complain about the cost of a public dental care plan, Davies notes that delivering universal health care is actually cheaper. “We have been coasting on past glories for decades,” said Davies. “Yes, we have excellent care through hospitals and physicians, but we have a two-tiered, US-style access to care for dental care, prescription drugs, eye care, auditory care, and mental health care.”

Canada to implement 988 suicide crisis line starting in fall 2023

starting at the end of November 2023, Canadians will be able to call 988 to be connected to a mental health crisis or suicide prevention service, free of charge. The Public Health Agency of Canada will decide which group will provide the service, along with the scope of care it will offer. The move will bring Canada in line with the United States, which launched its 988 service last month.

Indigenous people pay taxes: Demythologizing the Indian Act tax exemption

… just eight per cent of Canada’s Indigenous population — who could potentially qualify for the Section 87 exemption. However, this number is likely lower because status Indians only qualify for the exemption if their income is connected to a reserve… Even though nearly all Indigenous people in Canada pay tax on their income, Canadian governments have not spent nearly as much on services for them.

Canadians deserve high-quality care, but non-profit hiring crisis is standing in the way

Community based non-profits are not given the funds to provide salaries on par with municipalities, schools boards and hospitals… significant wage disparity has meant a mass exodus of non-profit workers. As a result, quality of care for our loved ones is compromised as staff turnover interrupts programs and leaves gaps in staffing, disrupting critical relationships and care systems.

Ontario extending $10/day child-care opt-in deadline to get more operators to apply

Just a few weeks ahead of September, uptake varies widely across municipalities, with some — particularly smaller areas — seeing all or nearly all operators apply, while other regions are seeing less than half of operators applying so far… In Toronto, the largest region, 587 out of a total of 1,042 licensed child-care centres have applied to opt in — and 32 have opted out — though the percentage of for-profit operators that have applied is much lower than the non-profits.

Why doesn’t Canada let schools provide child care?

Instead, they are putting up roadblocks, preventing provinces and territories from using federal child-care dollars to transform schools into one-stop centres for young children.

Ontario should ditch any plans to further privatize health care. It just doesn’t work — and usually makes matters worse

First, the government should ditch any plans to further privatize the system… That’s because it benefits not those who need health care, but those who can pay the handsome user fees required by what in effect is two-tier health care. Second, the government would be wise to view this crisis as an opportunity — a chance to rationalize and expand a public system that by and large does work.

Ford government plans more low wages for women health care workers

Ontario continues to pursue a low-wage strategy for the female health care workforce, a strategy that is quickly demolishing health care in Ontario… Everywhere, women health-care workers are quitting. It is even worse in the home care sector. We have had enough of the violence, the irregular work weeks, the unpaid time between clients, the lack of pensions, and the low wages.

We are facing a major staffing crisis in health care and nowhere more so than in home care. Yet this government continues to pursue a low-wage strategy for the female health care workforce, a strategy that is quickly demolishing health care in Ontario. We need to end the war on women health care workers. We need a government that can help make home care an attractive place to work — not a worse place to work.
