Ford said some of this year’s planned cuts — to public health, child care and land ambulance funding — will take effect Jan. 1… The new plan will see all municipalities — including Toronto — pay 30 per cent of public health care costs… municipalities will also have to pay 20 per cent of the cost of creating new child-care spaces, which the province previously fully funded.

Under his revised plan, local municipalities will be forced to cover 30 per cent of all their public-health costs, starting next year. The province currently covers 100 per cent of the cost of certain public-health programs, and 75 per cent of others… the Premier is going ahead with a move to renege on the previous Liberal government’s pledge to fund 100 per cent of the costs of new daycare spots, instead offering municipalities 80 per cent.

Instead of recognizing that distributing fake news reports on social media in an attempt to fool the public is an affront to democracy, the Progressive Conservative government is apparently reconsidering ONN’s usefulness because it is, ahem, a failure… if ONN is shut down it shouldn’t be because the PC party’s communications specialists now deem it a liability. It should be because it’s an affront to the citizens the government was elected to represent and a misuse of their tax dollars.

Once… Ontario Health is fully making the decisions on all aspects of those issues that were dealt with by the LHINs before, then they will be having public meetings.”… the Ontario Health Teams — alliances of local health providers that will oversee most aspects of health care within their jurisdictions — will be required to hold public meetings and publicly post minutes.

… funding has fallen by over 50 per cent over the past 25 years at a time when demand is exploding. Without political intervention, the gap between demand and supply will continue to grow. To counter this shortage of care, we need more practitioners… Interprofessional care teams are more efficient and allow our most specialized and expensive interventions to be matched to patients with the most significant needs.

They provide top-quality health care for tens of thousands of people without a family doctor; they free up doctors to focus on serious illnesses; and they stretch the province’s healthcare dollars… if we are to improve the quality and sustainability of our healthcare system. It’s time the OMA started to actively support nurse practitioners – and ended its self-serving “turf wars.”

In the last year alone, Ontario provided nearly $700 million in subsidies for fossil fuel consumption… No one wants to see public dollars wasted, least of all the Government of Ontario. If it takes the opportunity to buckle down on fossil fuel subsidies and reinvest those millions wisely, not only will it set the province on a path to a more sustainable future, it will also prove itself to be Canada’s vanguard for smart, fiscal efficiency.

Ford’s administration has pumped up the provincial deficit and fears of it to such heights that it makes spending money seem like a failure of government rather than a proper and necessary response to public need… there’s no excuse for the Ford government to delay concrete improvement by claiming the whole system needs to be revamped… Changes designed to prevent another healthcare serial killer also provide a path to improve the quality of life in these homes.

The federal health minister noted correctly that the Ontario government’s decision, which is due to take effect Oct. 1, was “inconsistent” with the Canada Health Act, the law governing medicare. That law sets out the criteria that provinces must meet to be eligible for federal medicare funding. One criterion is portability — the requirement that provincial medicare plans cover residents who are temporarily travelling elsewhere in Canada or abroad.

Ultralow interest rates are a problem, but also an opportunity. Borrowing has never been cheaper. If the federal government were to increase borrowing, only for a short period and only to fund one-off items such as new education facilities or transit infrastructure, it could finance that at very low costs, locked in for decades.
