Mental health services for everyone
Monday, June 27th, 2011
Jun 26 2011
The focus on children and youth in the first three years of the government’s 10-year mental health strategy will make a difference. But action is also required now on mental health services for adults and seniors. If one in three people got treatment for cancer, no government or health minister would be able to justify such poor performance. This is the situation for mental health care in Ontario and Canada. Countries like the U.K., New Zealand and Sweden spend at least 10 per cent of their health budgets on mental health, while Ontario spends 5.8 per cent.

More than just a medical centre
Sunday, June 26th, 2011
June 25, 2011
The centre offers health care services to people experiencing social, economic and cultural barriers. The idea behind the community health centre is to treat the person, not just their ailment. Bennett’s medical care is supported by a team of dieticians, nurses and counsellors, all working under one roof. They can deal with needs that normally can’t be addressed in an average 10-minute visit to a family doctor.

Studies warn drug prices will rise under trade deal
Friday, June 24th, 2011
June 24, 2011
The head of an agency tasked with safeguarding health care has been left in the dark by Ottawa on a multi-billion dollar trade deal that could result in soaring drug prices for consumers… Ontario potentially would be the hardest-hit province, paying $1.2 billion more annually… “Payers — consumers, businesses, unions and government insurers — would face substantially higher drug costs as exclusivity is extended on top-selling prescription drugs,” says [the] report, commissioned by the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association.

The best kept secret in health care
Wednesday, June 15th, 2011
Jun 14 2011
Community health centres are the closest thing Canada has to Tommy Douglas’s dream: a health-care system that treats people, not symptoms. They deal with the underlying causes of illness: poverty, isolation, poor diet, mental disorders. They thrive in places where people don’t speak English, don’t have access to a family doctor and don’t know how to navigate Canada’s complex, rigidly compartmentalized medical system. They welcome anyone who walks in the door regardless of race, background, socio-economic status or sexual orientation.

Ontario’s overlooked health crisis
Thursday, June 9th, 2011
Jun 07 2011
“Treatment for mental health and addiction issues right now is determined by your postal code,” says Mary Alberti, who heads the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario. She doesn’t think that’s right. She doesn’t think most Ontarians would tolerate this level of disparity, if they knew… That’s why the 10 provincial organizations that provide help for people with mental illness and addictions… have banded together for the first time… “We’re looking to make this a huge issue in the next election”…

Obesity: The next health challenge
Monday, June 6th, 2011
Jun 06 2011
Other countries, including Sweden, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands and France, have achieved significantly lower obesity rates than Ontario’s, ranging between 10 per cent and 11 per cent… What all of these countries share is an approach that looks beyond the health sector to engage other parts of society, and an emphasis on addressing the root causes of obesity rather than on treating the results.

For $41-billion, Canadians deserve a straight answer
Monday, June 6th, 2011
Jun. 02, 2011
Ottawa needs to be able to hold the provinces to measurable improvements in key areas – easing emergency-room delays, filling in gaps in catastrophic drug coverage and working together to lower pharmaceutical costs (to name a few). As for the money . . . Jack Kitts, the council’s chair, says… “Most health experts would agree that there’s probably enough money in the system, there’s enough human resources in the system, there’s enough capacity in the system, if we were to change transformatively how we deliver the service to maximize the use of those resources.”

Wait times: So much money, such modest progress
Friday, May 27th, 2011
May. 27, 2011
…wait times… have declined somewhat since the federal and provincial governments began throwing money at five procedures… representing about 8 per cent of all surgical procedures pursuant to the 2003-2004 health accord that offered up an additional $41-billion, indexed annually at 6 per cent, some of which was targeted to reduce wait times… During the recent election campaign, the parties hurriedly pledged to extend that 2003-2004 accord – set to expire in 2013-2014 – without giving any thought whatsoever as to why or how the money should be spent.

Preserving medicare means accepting changes
Wednesday, May 25th, 2011
May 24 2011
Single-payer administration of hospital and physician services has been “our ace in the hole” in terms of keeping administrative costs down. Private insurance is far more costly and administratively burdensome for both patients and providers… The recent commissions have done their work. Now it’s time for our federal, provincial and territorial governments to act, but in ways that respect the priorities and values of the majority of Canadians, rather than the interests of a few.
