The researchers developed protocols and best practices for key players in the child protection and justice system, all designed to break the child-welfare-to-prison pipeline… [including] more reasonable bail conditions, trauma-informed training for group home caregivers, “anti-oppressive” practices, the use of restorative justice, and encouraging police to simply caution youths in care when called for an incident or send them to “diversion” programs… rather than lay charges

Ford government cancels $28-million budget cut to children’s aid societies, wants to ‘listen and learn’

For the past several years, the government has in essence clawed back money from a society’s budget to basically force administrative efficiencies, such as reducing costs by cutting overhead or sharing services with another agency. Last year, efficiency clawbacks from agencies totalled $10 million overall. This year, the budget clawback is $15 million.

Ontario government slashes funding to children’s aid societies

The Ford government is reducing funding for children and youth at risk by $84.5 million, according to an analysis of provincial spending estimates by the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies… The cut comes as 18 child protection agencies struggle with deficits totalling more than $12 million. The deficits have already forced some agencies to lay off staff and reduce the number of children at risk they take into care.

Police chiefs urge province to tackle mental health

The provincial government should boost mental health services because a growing number of people with those problems are getting into trouble with the law, Ontario’s police chiefs say… “We are spending a lot of time and resources dealing with mental health issues,”… “This goes way back to the Mike Harris (Conservative) government, which started making cuts in social support. And guess who got to take a lot of those responsibilities?”… dealing with mental health… should be about addressing people’s needs at the front end so they don’t get into the justice system.”
