Time for Ford to act on Ontario’s reliance on international students for post-secondary funding

The government’s failure to properly fund post-secondary is the root cause of the burgeoning international student population and the strain it puts on housing… What it needs to do is reduce the system’s reliance on those students’ fees by reducing their numbers and making up the difference itself. That would help both the housing market and the stability of post-secondary education.

How did Ontario’s disgraceful disability support program get so bad?

The vast majority of Ontarians with a disability are not on the program. Of those who are, 57 per cent have either mental illnesses or developmental disabilities. Nevertheless, the PCs’ new “vision” for the disabled continues to push the optimistic goal of finding jobs for them… Instead, they are ignored by a provincial government that can afford to give wealthy people a break on their power rates, vacationers a tax break for renting a cottage, maybe even make licence plates free, a cheap political stunt that would cost $1 billion a year.

Violence against Ontario elementary teachers shouldn’t be a contract issue — it’s too important

Over the last decade, it has become the norm to integrate students with complex special needs into regular classrooms. Some boards still offer small, separate classes with more individual help, but that’s not what most parents demand… Students who can’t manage in a regular classroom even with a full-time educational assistant should be given a different type of help…

Ontario’s health system needs change. But has Ford got it right?

In the next layer, you will find 10 public-health organizations, down from 35, and 10 ambulance organizations, down from 59. One might have thought that these 10 new service areas might have been married up with 10 health regions, but alas, no… it’s still a simpler structure than what it replaced. What’s not yet known is how the Ford health-care regime will work in real life and how it will get local health professionals to work together.

So-called ‘super agency’ not a magic cure for Ontario’s health-care woes

All of these problems are well-known. The fixes for them are well-known, too. None of them involves merging all the province’s health-care agencies into one… If we want a super-agency to oversee all of health care, wouldn’t that be the health ministry? If the ministry doesn’t do that, what does it do? … Rather than waste time, money and energy on reshaping the health bureaucracy, the Ford government should move directly to specific solutions to well-identified problems.
