Ontario to fully fund nursing homes despite lower occupancies

Restricting admissions to single- and double-occupancy rooms will exacerbate a chronic shortage of long-term care beds in Ontario… the government’s ban on new admissions to ward rooms will eliminate 4,303 beds, representing 5.5 per cent of the province’s total… those who no longer need acute care but have nowhere else to go, reached a historic high of 5,300 as of Monday.

E-learning in Ontario: Way of the future or an ineffective teaching model?

… the most important factor for student achievement is how well e-learning programs are designed, delivered and supported… Contrary to popular opinion, quality e-learning programs cost as much as or more than the traditional classroom model, because students require extra resources to do well… in Michigan, students taking virtual courses have both a teacher and a mentor.

Homeless patients cost $2,500 more per hospital stay, study finds

The study… found that homeless patients arrived at the hospital with more health problems and stayed longer, often because there was nowhere to send them after they no longer needed acute care. Dr. Hwang’s past research found that homeless people land in hospital more often, with 23 hospitalizations per 100 homeless people in one year versus five hospitalizations per 100 people in the general population.

Child development not linked to length of parental leave, government argues

…the question of whether longer parental leaves have tangible advantages for children is the subject of great debate among sociologists and economists… Part of the reason for the lack of consensus is that teasing out the effects of parental time off on children’s well-being involves evaluating a host of interconnected variables, including infant health, the quality of child care, parenting styles, work force opportunities, income, gender equality and families’ support systems.
