Fair Tax System Down the Drain if Loopholes Aren’t Closed

Monday, September 11th, 2017

The tax benefits are significant, and the higher your income the more you benefit. First, there’s income sprinkling. The finance department presentation on the loopholes uses the example of two neighbours, both high-income earners collecting $220,000 a year. One, an employee, would pay $79,000 in income taxes. But the other, who had set up a personal corporation, could split the income with adult family members… The result would be a $44,000 tax bill

The tax system can’t possibly do what people want it to do

Sunday, September 10th, 2017

… the long hours a doctor works, the vacations a small business owner never takes, and all the rest. I’m sure all this is true but — how to put this — the tax system is not intended or designed to compensate for every hardship of life, or to weigh in the balance all of the pluses and minuses of one job versus another. It can’t possibly do so. Rather, there has long been a consensus that the tax burden should be apportioned on the basis of “ability to pay.” There’s no perfect measure of this, but income is the best we’ve got

Put critical mental health care within reach of all

Saturday, September 9th, 2017

Health Quality Ontario says proven treatments provided by psychologists, nurses, youth counsellors and social workers — such as cognitive behavioural therapy — should be covered by public health insurance. The evidence is clear for these specific psychotherapies, which are the first line of treatment for nearly every type of child or youth mental illness… For severe anxiety, a combination of CBT and medication is successful with 80 per cent of patients.

Nurses announce support of proposed tax changes that have doctors fuming

Friday, September 8th, 2017

“Nurses have told us that they believe people should pay their fair share, and the principle of paying people well for what they do is always the foundation. If you have advanced education, you’re in a job where you need a lot of skills and knowledge, you should be paid well for that. But you should also be taxed fairly for that, because income is income.”

Ontario to sell cannabis at government-run stores, online

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Despite calls from many premiers for more guidance on the file, the federal government has committed to legalizing the recreational use of the drug by July 1. But, to date, Ottawa has indicated that it will leave the contentious issues of regulating the wholesale distribution and retailing of cannabis up to the provinces and territories.

Why the Liberals’ proposed tax changes are taking a pounding

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

The changes do not target small business, or doctors, as such: only those who turn themselves into corporations… It is that they pay so much less in tax than other small businesses, and other doctors, of equivalent income: the ones who did not incorporate. The former pay less tax than the latter, not because they work harder, or take more risks, but solely because they are incorporated.

The Liberals can and should win this fight against the rich

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

Since high earners have the means and the incentive to make use of tax planning strategies to shelter income from taxation, higher tax rates typically result in lower amounts of reported taxable income. Tax revenues may increase, but not appreciably… the Liberals raised the top personal income tax rate, many top earners were able to manoeuvre around it, and now the Liberals want to make it harder to shelter income from the top rate.

NDP needs a radical makeover

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

Democratic socialism is the authentic alternative to exclusionist populism. It embraces the proposition that wealth is created by those who work for a living and not by those who control capital. At a time when the division of wealth and power grows ever more unequal, the NDP needs to shift to a more radical position.

Bill Morneau should show courage on tax reform

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

… 60 per cent of the small-business tax break benefit is enjoyed by those who earn more than $150,000 per year… Our small-business tax regime, like many other parts of our unwieldy tax code, has been abused in recent decades, often perverted into loopholes for the wealthiest few… The intense backlash, however misguided, is a reminder of why successive governments have been so reluctant to tame Canada’s overgrown tax code

Tax changes are about levelling the playing field

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

As more and more people set up corporations, there is a growing number of individuals who have access to tax advantages not available to other hard-working Canadians. This means that some of the highest-income earners are effectively being taxed at a much lower rate than everyone else. It is legal, but as a former business owner and high-income earner myself, I do not think it is right.
