Decrying social assistance cuts

The programs help low-income people on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program get into housing by providing their first- and last-month rents, help cover hydro arrears or pay for needed repairs and other costs that could allow them to stay in their homes… “When you are homeless or have low income, you tend to have multiple legal problems at once… They are frequently related to housing or social assistance or the interaction between those two.”

Omnibus crime bill a concern

… the building of far greater numbers of prison cells, with far more restrictive rules and far fewer useful programs — is a totally wrongheaded approach. First: Health care is appalling inside prisons… Second: Educational and social remedial programs are inadequate… Third: Treating people like caged animals is a sure way to ensure that they will behave like caged creatures and not like socialized human beings… Take note of and repair these problems, and then, and only then, you can consider whether you need or want any expansion of prisons in this country.

Commissioner calls for reform

Social assistance is administered through a broken system… “Tinkering won’t fix it,” said Commissioner Frances Lankin. “There’s some fundamental reform required.” Three years ago, the Ontario government announced it was embarking on a poverty reduction strategy, with a special focus on reducing child poverty. The strategy included the establishment of a review commission… “Usually, we’ve stopped at what can be done at the local level… But this is looking at the bigger picture … this will be the most important systemic change that will happen.”

Why the Grits and NDP will merge

The NDP are not as comfortable with the free market system as the Liberals. They are more anti-American, have close ties to the trade union movement, and are against involvement in any foreign wars. But… there are far more similarities than differences when it comes to major issues. A distinctive and broadly appealing center-left policy platform begins to emerge. It focuses on health care, education, equality of opportunity, the environment, and accountability: all cast in a fiscally responsible frame work.
