‘Why Austerity Kills’
Ultimately austerity has failed because it is unsupported by sound logic or data. It is an economic ideology. It stems from the belief that small government and free markets are always better than state intervention.” Austerity isn’t even good economics: “Austerity has choked off economic growth — deepening recessions. By contrast, governments that have increased public-sector spending have seen faster economic recoveries, which in turn helps them to grow out of debt.”

Wynne turning her attention to economics
The Liberals are ruling out some money-saving measures such as increasing school class sizes or delaying the roll-out of full-day kindergarten… Queen’s Park wants to avoid significant public sector layoffs… The Premier contends that subsidizing the wages of young workers while they learn in-demand skills will lead to permanent employment, and a better-trained work force will allow businesses to expand… Where once she framed these matters in social-justice terms, now she speaks of them in economic ones.

Economy looms as 2015’s big issue
… despite all the fanfare over trade agreements, Canada still hasn’t completed a single one within growth-oriented Asia… We have neither diversified markets adequately nor moved our mix of exports satisfactorily beyond commodities. The OECD regularly places us in the bottom half of innovation nations… we are looking yet again for a recovering U.S. economy to lift us up and for the world to knock on our door for minerals and foodstuffs.

Charities aid our economies, communities and lives
As part of their reduced commitment, governments replaced core funding with short-term project funding that no longer paid for overhead or staffing. This short-sighted approach gutted the organizational capacity of many charities, especially small to medium ones. As a result, these charities lack the necessary personnel, infrastructure and resources to successfully fundraise… time to identify the needs, build internal capacity and measure outcomes … just like businesses.

They also warned Canadian policy-makers against pulling too hard on the reins of austerity… Canadians are being kept in the dark about the details of the Conservative multi-year program to cut about $5 billion a year until the election in 2015. Fire Jason Kenney and freeze immigration
About 1.3 million Canadians don’t have jobs. Another million are underemployed or have given up looking for work. The unemployment rate for the young is twice the national average, though they are the most educated in our history. Yet Kenney has kept bringing 250,000 and more immigrants every year. Many of them can’t find jobs, either. Their unemployment rate is twice the national rate. Of those who do have jobs, three in four are not working in their fields — not using the education and skills for which they were selected as immigrants.
