Health-care reform needs the discipline of deadlines

Health-care needs more money. But money without the certainty of reform merely sets up the next cycle of failure. Political pressure might force each participant into agreeing to hard targets for improvement by set dates, before money is allowed to be on the agenda… The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) exists, in part, for just such a task. A rolling 12-month evaluation on progress toward agreed targets could become a permanent feature of Canadian health care.

It’s time for this generation’s political leaders to tackle the hard issues in Canadian health care

Provincial health-care systems differ widely over titles, practices, pay and performance metrics. Their contribution to wider sharing of best practices could be agreeing to some shared definitions, targets and an agency to measure performance… as the pandemic revealed, provinces in a health-care crisis must support each other.

Power will flow to a post-pandemic Ottawa

… if you are a near-bankrupt borrower, as several Canadian provinces and cities will soon be, you cannot demand money from the printing press owner without it coming with strings attached. For the first time since the Depression and the following war, Ottawa will be propelled into a much more powerful policy decision-making role, as a result of this shift in power dynamics, in ways that will seriously test the old boundaries of Canadian federalism.

Pandemic proves value of guaranteed incomes

We know that we will emerge from this crisis with higher levels of unemployment than we have seen in two generations. We should be prepared for a winter ahead into which millions of Canadians will be headed broke, unemployed and close to despair… It might lead to the most transformational changes in today’s rich but increasingly divided and unequal economies since Bismarck invented the public pension system, nearly 140 years ago.

The crushing impact of social media freeloaders

Here are two breathtaking stats: 65 per cent share and 80 per cent margin. Those are market experts’ estimates of share of ad revenues and the profit margins of the social media duopoly in Canada. No other ad business in the world has that stranglehold, no other media business earns one quarter of those stratospheric profit margins. Unlike them, their Canadian television, newspaper and magazine competitors pay taxes.
