‘An important beginning’: Toronto police to divert some 911 mental health calls to civilian crisis centre

Amid growing public pressure to send social workers and health care professionals to mental health calls — not police — city council voted earlier this year to launch a separate pilot program to see civilian dispatched to mental health crisis calls where violence is not being threatened… The cost of the project, estimated to be $522,000, will be absorbed by the service’s operating budget, police said.

Why universal pharmacare will help get Canada’s drug costs under control — and why Big Pharma hates it

It might be more accurate to say we can’t afford to go without it… The Hoskins report estimates an annual savings of about $5 billion in total drug spending once universal pharmacare is fully implemented… And it would strengthen employers’ ability to hire and properly compensate employees. Employer contributions to drug plans generally reduce worker pay.

Post-secondary students get the bad news about their OSAP grants

While tuition fees dropped by hundreds of dollars thanks to the recent changes… OSAP funding was cut by thousands of dollars. “We all feel that education should be a right, not a privilege… It’s not something that just people that come from wealthy backgrounds (deserve)… It should be available to everyone, no matter your background.”… students and their families are going to have to reconsider whether post-secondary education is a viable option for them
