Ontario revamps mental health services

Ontario’s plan to revamp mental health services with a new agency to focus on cutting long wait times is just talk unless it’s backed up with “substantial and immediate” funding of almost $400 million in Premier Doug Ford’s spring budget, mental health groups warn… Her plan includes a mental health Centre of Excellence, to function like Cancer Care Ontario has done over the years to make the provincial cancer system more responsive, as a “single point of accountability” to improve wait times and boost service levels.

‘They have failed us.’ Parents of kids with rare diseases feel let down by Ford government

Families needing revolutionary and expensive drugs to beat the symptoms of rare diseases like cystic fibrosis say Health Minister Christine Elliott has let them down after championing improved access to medications when the PCs were in opposition just a few years ago… Elliott said she has been trying to speed the federal and provincial approval processes for the drugs and to get them covered in Ontario… In 2014, Elliott said “we have to be able to find the money” to pay for such drugs by restructuring the health-care system.

Canada lags behind peers in number of doctors per capita: report

Canada lags well behind all but the United States among 11 of the wealthiest countries when it comes to the number of doctors per capita, a new report indicates… Canadians have 2.7 practising physicians for every 1,000 people, compared with 2.6 for the U.S. Norway has the most at 4.8. At the same time, Canadians are average in terms of their physician visits each year… [with] higher than average hospital stays combined with a lower than average per capita number of hospital beds

Some of Ontario’s biggest hospitals are filled beyond capacity nearly every day, new data reveals

On any day, one out of six hospital beds is occupied by a patient who doesn’t need to be in hospital, but cannot be safely discharged home. This is a long-running phenomenon in health systems across Canada known as “alternate level of care” (ALC). Lengthy waits for long-term care spaces are the chief cause, but a lack of available home care and other forms of continuing care also contributes.

Ontario hospitals ask for nearly $1 billion to ease hallway health-care problem

“Ontario hospitals are the most efficient in the entire country”… the additional $922 million sought for 141 publicly-funded hospitals represents an increase of 4.85 per cent. “You can’t expect to end hallway health care and keep asking hospitals to cut their expenditures and become more efficient given what the data shows. Our backs are against the wall here.”

Updates on the Ontario Health Agency

The elimination of regional leadership in Ontario’s health system

The health team design principles suggest that regional leadership of the system is not important if local care is better integrated. This may be true but having experience in working with the LHINs to implement change in Ontario, I worry about the loss of a regional leadership structure, which demonstrably improved quality in Ontario health care.

OPP have saved more than 100 lives with naloxone

The OPP say calls regarding overdoses rose 121 per cent between 2016 and 2018. Further, OPP data collected between September 2017 to November 2019 shows: The majority (66 per cent) of naloxone recipients were male and 34 per cent were female; The average age of naloxone recipients was 31.5 for females and 32 for males; Most incidences occurred inside a residence

Video visits with doctors are a smart idea

There are three much bigger issues the government needs to tackle to reduce the average wait time to be admitted to hospital from an emergency department. It now tops a sickening 16 hours. Those are a lack of nursing home and long-term health care beds and a shortage of home-care services. And they won’t be solved by the $3 million the province plans to spend on video visits and other digital innovations.

Ontario axing 9 execs in bid to save money, increase efficiencies in health care

A health ministry official said no other employees other than the head of the LHINs, which provide local health care planning, are being laid off now and no offices are closing, but in future there will be “significant” savings as real estate assets are consolidated… Under the plan, between 30 and 50 “Ontario Health Teams” will form across the province to co-ordinate all levels of care, from doctor visits to hospitals stays and home care.
