Creating programs for kids with mentally ill parents

… the burden of mental illness and addictions in Ontario is greater than that of all cancers and infectious diseases put together. But… families reporting they receive less care and support than friends and neighbours with physical ailments. The lack of a national or provincial strategy — never mind stable funding —for helping children of mentally ill parents means community organizations nationwide are collaborating and cobbling together scarce mental-health resources to support them.

Health Canada cuts funding to women’s health research groups

Six organizations studying how government policies on everything from toxic chemicals to the legacy of residential schools impact women’s health will lose their funding as part of widespread cuts to the federal budget. Health Canada expects to save $2.85 million a year by eliminating the Women’s Health Contribution Program, which supports the work of four research centres and two communications networks across the country, by next March… the biggest loss will be how the groups went beyond clinical research to focus on how particular government policies and regulations affect the health of women.

New GG lays out vision for Canada’s future

“A nation where all Canadians can grow their talents to the maximum. A nation where all Canadians can succeed and contribute… But there is much work to be done to fully achieve our vision of a smart and caring nation… I believe it is essential to support families and children, to reinforce learning and innovation and to encourage philanthropy and volunteerism,” said Johnston, as he outlined what his focus would be in his time as the 28th governor general. Johnston described those principles as the three pillars for his vision of what Canada would look like as it celebrates its 150th birthday in 2017.
